Why in the world are you moving to Dodge City soon? Are you bringing kids for the schools? If you are, good luck again.

Banyon stay away from the Devil's Triangle....Dodge City, Liberal, and Garden City. If you are in Kansas, move close to Wchita or Lawrence. Somewhere around there. I have heard to stay away from Emporia as well. I live in Newton myself and I like it here for a several reaons. One it is close to Wichita if I want to go shopping or go to a concert or something in a big city. Two it is a small town but not too small and not too big. It is two hours from Kansas City, Topeka and Lawrence if I want to go there. If you have children, they have Hutchinson Community College in town and a four year college Bethel College. Their sport teams are awesome and there isn't that much gang activit, some but not as much as Dodge. As far as drugs go there are alot here; however it is not as bad as Dodge as well. When it comes to Gangs and drugs DC is as bad a Wichita per capita, if that explains anything to you.

The people here are nice; however if you are not from here it is hard to get to know people, but if you are outgoing it is no problem. I actually love it here. THE TOWN IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CLEAN!!!!!

One downfall......TRAINS! tRAINS! AND MORE TRAINS!

Your questions about the SEC. DC cannot fill the civic center, I do not understand why they want a SEC for anything. They will be able to fill it if they bring in Latino bands and things like that.

I went to Ozzy and Rob Zombie at the Kansas Colliseum last night and it was sold out; however it did not sell out until day of show. Dodge Cty will not be able to fill a SEC for concerts.

Everyone, well most everyone in Dodge knows we'll never see big name acts at the civic center or the sec. What we can expect to see is an over priced and over sized facility that is being built to put money into the pockets of a few individuals.

The question (for me anyway) is how big and how much money is really needed to be spent on a facility that has limited potential? I'd much rather see a good convention center that could double for events that benefit the people of Dodge City and Ford County. One option is to partner with private interprise. There is no reason why the city and county could not work together with a local hotel to meet our needs. Another option could be for the city and county to build a facility that would cater to our life style in sw kansas.
Perhaps a city/county fair grounds facility. Another option might be expand our civic center. There are plenty of ideas which would create a positive influence in our county and city without having to spend 50-60 million dollars.

In my mind there is no doubt that we need and should do something. We have alot of creative people in Dodge and Ford County and we'd be wise to tap into that resource. (Not to mention all the members of the Dodgeboard)

WND has been 10 years of confusion. Confusion caused by this and past commissions. Confusion caused because too many people have a special interest.

We have the money just sitting in the wnd account. We have a court order to build and operate a sec but we have yet to see it become a reality!

WHY NOT COMMISSIONERS? NO ONE IS CARRYING A PETETION! WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE NOW?

Don't overlook the second events center being built

seems that the (maybe) casino operated by (perhaps) Butler National Services does not want horses around their casino or ('their') Events Center -- so a second expensive horse barn event expo center is being actively, but almost secretly, being designed by CFAB. No announced meetings about it that I've seen.

Seems that $30 million on ONE Events Center would include about anything anyone wanted, but no, CFAB's Ann and Lance want a 4-H building of some millions of dollars for their use.

Time to Just Say No.

And now with a second applicant going for the casino -- but probably not on the land that Butler wants (aka, Joe Bogner's place way west of town), putting the events center anywhere until that is sorted out would be very stupid -- unless you own the land, I guess. Or unless you actually put it in the city core, as promised for 10 years -- and let the casino pay for its own roads, and water pipes and sewers, etc. (which would be a 'gift' to the casino IF the events center is built first and next to the casino -- probably an illegal gift, but what the heck -- Dodge City ... ).

Why Not Dodge!!: Dec. 15, Long Branch Gaming Co. casino application, City Hall

PS Why do they say Butler National Services Co is local in the Globe ? It is in Olathe, Kansas, and not owned by anyone locally.

My guess is they're waiting to see what happens with the casino. I have one myself to ask why we still haven't built the SEC, but I now believe waiting may be the best choice. The SEC and casino will compliment each other if done right.

For those who feel "we will never fill the SEC" haven't given much thought to how a casino, if done right, will make that possible. The casino will turn this town upside down, and thats exactly what it needs.

This - as usual is just a big mess. On both sides of the SEC issue. I think dodge just has the same pains as most small towns. No one can decide what to do, rental property is hard to find, and there is a line of demarcation of "good side / bad side" of town.

Banyon - Welcome to Dodge City

Not everyone in Dodge City thinks like the messages I've read in this post. I was not born and raised in Dodge City but have lived here more than 10 years. This is a nice town, with nice people and plenty to do. My kids have gone to both the private and public schools in town and both are good. They have good teachers in both. I feel like my kids have gotten a good education in Dodge City and we have made a lot of really good friendships.

There are a lot of people in town who are anxious for the SEC to be build and have the kinds of activities that will be possible. The Civic Center is very nice but the layout limits certain activities that would be possible in another venue. Even though every seat is not full at every event, the Civic Center is heavily scheduled. There are a lot a things to do in Dodge City and the SEC center will enhance that.

Rental housing is tight right now. I would suggest you talk to the people you will be working for. They will probably know what landlords to contact.

Welcome to Dodge City.

What DCFan said. I left Dodge after 10 or so years, then came back. But I do have a problem with us (them) now wanting 2 events centers.

old timer,

I can tell you for a fact that not only will a 35-45 million dollar sec will be built but also a very expensive 4-H type facility. We'll have both!!!

This last summer when the repeal question of wnd sales tax was in the hot seat and Judge Innes told the County that they could not even vote on the issue of repealing the tax.

County Commissioner Kim Goodnight had a plan in the mix. The County played with the idea of appealing the Judges decision. But Commissioner Kim told the city he would ensure that there would be no appeal, if in return the city commission would back his idea of a large 4-H type facility. Needless to say, this end around play by Kim Goodnight really chapped the butts of a few city commissioners , but they aggreed. In essence, Mr. Goodnight black mailed (a nasty word to use, but very appropriate) the city commission into doing things his way. After all, the last thing this city commission wanted was for the people of Ford County to vote on the repeal, and stopping the appeal and repeal process was their top priority. (which they accomplished)

The city commission is still ahead on this one. They stopped the appeal and repeal issue and I'd be willing to bet, when this 4-H type facility is being developed Kim Goodnight won't be in office, so the city will feel no obligation to honor the agreement. (maybe)
