| My mom used to hostess at the Shangri la........ spent many many happy days there rompin with the owner's granddaughter....... they had the neatest house just past the office. The living room had recessed lighting and it was a step down living room - quite the thing then..... We used to get to iron the sheets on the mangle. Bill (whose gone now) and Yosi ran the cantonese resturant. Was so strange..... Bill was Chinese.... Yosi - Japanese..... I saw her last at bingo at the V......... she's a bingo fool!!...... They were always so nice to us kids......... always fed us but then on birthdays we always had to eat seaweed soup. Was so strange for a gal used to seein seaweed washed up on the gulf........... Yosi is a Heroshema (sp) survivor....... Both immigrants that brought many family over without protesting or shoving thier flag in your face. Just gentle folks that wanted a better life. And contributed something to the country they chose to come to. Imagine comming to the USA when they were the ones that almost killed ya......... I think thier relatives still run Silver Spur resturant........ Bill and Yosi moved to SS resturant after Shangri la folded........ aaahhhhh the good ole times.

| Helper- Thanks for the picture of the post card. That is just the way I remembered it. It was located where the present KFC is now. KC & TexKan- Ah, some really good memories. We lived outside of town and were dirt poor, so didn't get to eat out often, but I do remember one time when all of my older brothers were home going to the Shangri-La. Their was two old ladies just finishing their meal when we went in. There was probably 12 to 14 of us and two of my brothers are real cards. Those ladies sat and eave dropped and were laughing at my brothers' stories and were still there drinking green tea when we left. I remember too, that it was the first time I had seen frog legs on a menu. Thanks, Ham |

| I really thought that the grandstands would be there forever. That was where I had one of the first beers in my life. Well, more like the fourth, but, who's counting. I can remember playing church league softball at wright park and having to drive behind them on sundays. When I was a kid, I lived on park street and I can still hear my parents complaining about the noise on saturday nights.

| The Speedway noise was the loudest argument for shutting it down.... so what do we do? We build a new Raceway Park in a location where the prevailing winds push the Raceway Park noise across our smart little town.

| Does anyone have any information as to how many more buildings/businesses are going to be torn down or interfered with due to the new road construction? Just driving down Wyatt Earp, there appears to be many very close to the road. I know of several businesses who are selling buildings to the city, then leaving town. In addition, I believe the dorms at St. Marys are going to be torn down. Such a waste of some pretty well built structures. I wonder how much asbestos is involved in them?? |

| I bet quite a bit. They were built in the mid to late 60's, right? It is a shame to lose those buildings. Would have made great high-rise senior citizen housing. If it weren't for the asbestos, wiring, plumbing, etc. that prolly were never replaced. More than likely cheaper to tear down and start over. What a shame.
