Then take it to the mat with em!! They need to follow the rules - wether it's "pro" or "con" the issue. I'd also take Powers to task - To get upset with the voting public that care enough to come out and be a part of the process is just disgraceful to me.
I don't know any of the fellers but sounds like the 3 ring circus it always has been - goes right along with the televised circus that they have during council meetings........ It's like that in all small towns - including the one I live in!!

This matter may not be completely over with though. The Zoning Board is sending a recommendation to the Ford County Commission that the zoning change not be allowed. I would think that the County Commission might be able to overturn and/or not follow the recommendation and still allow it to go through.

I would call upon all Ford County residents to attend the next County Commission meeting on Monday, Oct. 16th, at 7 pm. Just to make sure that the Ford County Commissioners don't try to pull a fast one on us.

Did anyone notice the Blobe's headline:
Zoning board fails to recommend permit for recycling plant

They are showing their true colors, ain'd they?

The Zoning board didn't fail (excepting in the Globe's eyes), they SUCCEEDED in denying. Even if'n it was with just a simple majority...

Yes and I posted feedback to the online version, I told them that it is impossible for the zoning board to fail at anything. They either approve or disapprove the request for land use.

I also told them that if they wanted to use the word FAIL in the headline that the proper use would have been: Kansas Waste Recovery Failed to get Zoning for Proposed Location

Dodge City Daily Globe is a joke as far as newspapers go, and Eric Swanson is even a bigger joke as far as calling himself a reporter.

Recycling plant plan is nixed by developer

By Tim Vandenack

The Hutchinson News

tvandenackAThutchnews.com

DODGE CITY - Dennis Hernandez will drop plans to build a recycling plant in Ford County, citing the heavy opposition the controversial proposal has drawn.

"I think I would have an uphill ride all the way," he said Tuesday, a day after the Ford County zoning board voted 2-1 to recommend against approval of Hernandez's request for a conditional-use permit. "We got the feeling they don't want it there, so we'll bow out and go to another location." Astute, ain'd he?

Lowell Brakey, who spearheaded efforts against the plans at the proposed site on the southwestern outskirts of Dodge City, expressed disappointment at Hernandez's decision to abandon Ford County. He said there are other, more apt locations for a recycling facility than the one Hernandez proposed and that he would not oppose the proposal "as long as it was location sensitive."

Hernandez had proposed construction of a 60,000-square-foot structure on the undeveloped plot where aluminum, plastic and other material from 375 to 750 tons of garbage per day would have been sorted for recycling. He had proposed composting at the location as well, but dropped that element last month owing to an outcry of opposition.

Hernandez's plans generated a strong response from the start. Many residents who live near the proposed site attended a July 10 meeting of the Ford County Solid Waste Committee and about 120 showed up again Tuesday at the zoning board meeting, which advises the Ford County Commission.

The chief concerns seemed to be smell and the possibility of a tornado or some other disaster or mishap at the facility. Hernandez, owner of Ashland-based Kansas Waste Recovery, says he has no control over natural disasters, but that all the garbage would have been handled inside the landscaped, 60,000-square-foot building, minimizing the escape of odors.

"The only smell you smell is inside the building," he said. "We didn't feel that was a big deal, but they thought it was."

Now, he said he'll focus his efforts on a proposed recycling and composting facility in Wichita, with an eye down the road to construction of a facility somewhere else in western Kansas. "I will have to find a different community that's willing to keep, embrace the idea," he said. OK; but why blame the community at large?

The project here, financed in part by two silent partners from Florida and Kansas City, Mo., would have cost $8 million and employed 30 people to start, most earning $10 to $15 an hour. If the garbage processed eventually reached 750 tons, Hernandez said the employee count could have reached 100.

Whatever the case, some didn't think the pros outweighed the cons, at least at the proposed site.

Aside from odor, some plan critics expressed concern that a recycling plant would have harmed adjacent home property values. Moreover, Brakey and Mark Shriwise, director of Ford County's Planning, Zoning and Environmental Health Department, say the plans didn't conform to the Ford County comprehensive plan, a guide to development here.

Brakey said building near Ford County's two meatpacking plants would be a more suitable idea since there would be little possibility of creating new odor issues at such a site. That's not a good idea, either.

I can't help wonder if the location was not near one of the Ford County Zoning Boards staffers residence, would it have passed?

Don't get me wrong, I am glad that it didn't. I would have dreaded having it up north where I live, but doubt I would have had the zoning board going to bat for me, since I am not on the board.

Just seems like a conflict of interest. One of the board members is not only a direct competitor of JAG, the proposed location for the site, but also lives within a mile of the proposed site, yet his motives are not questioned for spearheading a campaign against the proposed site.

Nobody wants it in their backyard, but some of us aren't as fortunate to be on the board that recommends for/against.

I guess I don't get who you are talking about here Tee! There was no zoning board member leading any opposition against it.
