| There is a guy I work with that had a $600 framing router stolen out of his garage. He called police and filed a report, a few days later he went to Bob's Pawn Shop and saw it there. Was told that he gave like $25-50 for it to a guy. The police was called but Bob's wouldn't give it to the police because he was financially vested in the item. That didn't make a whole lot of sense to me....aren't there laws about possessing stolen property. It shouldn't matter if you are financially vested or not, it was stolen.

| Was it marked or did the guy have the serial number recorded so he could prove it was his?

| He still had the original paperwork so he could prove that the serial number on it was the one that he owned.

| Bubba, I’d have a big damn problem with the cops at that point.

| I'm with you, Poots - they do serve a purpose to help people get out of those once- or twice-in-a-lifetime scrapes, but not for continued support, because once you're out of your own belongings, you resort to pawning others' things. If the guy is legit and tries to keep from buying stolen property, then I'm all for it. But once he screws up and deals in stolen property, especially if he suspects or knows it's stolen, then that's when he no longer serves a purpose and becomes a scourge on society.

As far as I was concerned, as soon as the tool was identified as being stolen, and Bob's Pawn didn't surrender the stolen item to the police. Bob's Pawn Shop became just another crook. That is my opinion, an I'm entitled to it!

| I'm sure that's how your friend relayed the story. Just seems like that ain't right. It's a Fedral law I think. Course on the other hand - the store owner certainly knew anyone willing to take $25 for a $600 router - likelihood is that it's hot. I'm pretty sure that a list of stolen property is sent to pawn brokers on a weekly basis. Down here that's an easy way to wind up in jail. I know one place they did a sting on - undercovers was sellin stuff that had been listed a stolen. Owner got to spend an evening in jail, had to go to court, and wasn't too happy. He felt like he was set up, but got popped just the same. He is still in business but I bet he's more careful. Sure it cost him a pretty penny.

| Hey, Bubba - if I really wanted the item back, I'd have probably bought it back just to make sure I got it. Then submit all the paperwork I had and the paperwork from the 'sale' and make sure either A. I got my money back - all of it, or B. the pawn shop owner was out of business. But I don't think I'd wait till the cops finally figured out it was wrong to fence stolen goods. Ya might never get it back at that point. Now, when you DO get it back, make sure you have adequate insurance for it. And if it's stolen again, submit the theft to the insurance company. Then you can go buy a new one and screw the pawn shop. Or let somebody else do it.

The CAN take the merchandise, BUT the pawn shop owner is vested in it. When the person sold it to the pawn shop, they sign a paper stating that THEY own it. Doesn't mean the pawn shop owner is DEALING in stolen merchandise, but he still has some kind of ownership in it, being that he bought it in good faith. If the cops seize that merchandise they still can NOT release it to the owner, until the little thief is prosecuted. WHY?? because it is EVIDENCE. Which means the thief's lawyer and the judge etc, is entitled to SEE the evidence at trial. I also know the people that owned this merchandise, and YES they did find their property there, and YES the police did seize it. and NO I don't work at Bob's Pawn shop.
