| After looking at your services, I noticed the Backround intelligent transfer service started but in manual mode. Other services can start manual services. The only way to prevent it is to actually disable the service in service manager. Try that and see if the problem goes away. Your computer may be trying to download an update in the background that shows needed but is already installed due to a corrupted install history index in Wondows.

| Thanks to all. I stopped my computer's BITS and then (upon further review) disabled its BITS. We'll see what happens now. FWIW, lurker's BITS are still running in both automatic and manual mode.

| I just returned from this afternoon's duties (checking all the trees & tires in the hood) and heard the familiar rumbling and burping once again. I stopped the Windowz Update service (Enables the download and installation of Windows updates. If this service is disabled, this computer will not be able to use the Automatic Updates feature or the Windows Update Web site. BooHoo! I can enable it when I want it now.) and it fought me but finally stopped... and the problem stopped, too. Additionally, I disabled it. Mostly a'cuz it won't let me control its timing. The thing's like having a bobcat dropped in with the hope that it might find a mouse. Way too much inconvenience for a toy. Just because bill microsoftdick gates' product is inferior doesn't mean I need to step aside while it attempts to correct its error(s) on a daily basis.

| You know... You might try running HouseCall from TrendMicro. It's a free online virus scan and it works great! Also I noticed that your RAM seems a little low, to have all those tasks running and that little of Random Access Memory could cause some issues like you seem to be experiencing.

| Thanks gunnar. My RAM is more like a GOAT and I am looking for some used boards for this mosheen. I had a major failure last Thursday. On reboot my WINPoET wouldn't launch.... no internet service without it. To the best of my guessing, I believe an out of control microsoft scan was gobbling my virtual memory and I stopped the scanning but too late for the VM... Still trying to understand if'n I need to give it a BM. I tried nearly everything software-wise.... so I bought a router Saturday but ran into trouble installing it without internet service.... Finally figger'd out how to shove it in sideways without the CD's help.... It's working OK sofar. Trend Micro's CW Shredder saved me a few years ago when coolwebsearch hijacked my bow-zer. I haven't run their online scan but will sometime later tonight or tomorrow. THANKS gunnar.
