Wireless internet

Currently have wireless internet for my laptop at home. Recently purchased a desktop computer and would like to be able to access the internet from it as well.Unfortunately, I am not very computer savy.

Was wondering if someone might be able to post some simple instructions for me as to how to accomplish this task? Thanks!

I assume you have a wireless router already installed?

If you want the desktop to be wireless, then you need to get a wireless network adapter. For a desktop get one that plugs into the a USB port.

Then it becomes a simple matter of using the installation CD to make it work with the PC and find your router. You're already got the hard part done with the first connection.

If you do not have some kind of password protection on your wireless connection I would encourage you to do so. While not always required I find it's helpful to get the same brand adapter as your router if possible.

If you have anything more complex than that, given what you say, I'd see if detector makes house calls, his politics stink but his computer skills don't.

If you have the wireless router, there should be a place to hook up the hardwired internet cable from the router to the PC (mine does anyway, I have all Linksys)

If you want the desktop to be wireless then I've got to agree with OoD. If you have Windows XP it should be pretty painless to just plug in the USB network adapter and follow the directions.

I do stink at politics but it's a smelly subject anyway

Just like OutofDodge said, make sure you password protect your wireless connection. If someone is "wardriving" around and finds your system open, that gives the person free access to the internet as well as your computer system. They can download pirated music or software for example and when the recording industry wants to sue, they will see the source as your computer. Ouch!
