My Norton anti-virus keeps giving me a pop-up stating that an attempt was resenctly made to attack my computer. It also tells me the computer from which the attack came. How do I interperet these #'s 4.242.216.223?

That is the IP address of the other computer.

It looks to be a bogus IP address. The IP Address is an identification number like a phone number sorta. Its used to identify devices on a network. Hackers often "spoof" an address so they can't be traced.

Unfortunately, to protect anonymity on the Internet there is not much you can do. You could block it but chances are they will just use a different IP address.

The IP address comes back to a user who uses Level 3 communications as their ISP and it came from Tualatin, Oregon.

To report abuse issues to Level3, email abuse@level3.net. Be sure and send them a copy of your most recent logfile that shows the intrusion attempts. Unless you present yourself as a network administrator, don't expect to get a followup or a reply.
