No doubt we are spoiled with todays computers. I hear complaints all the time that 'My PC's too slow' when they have Outlook open, 4-5 word documents open, 2 host mainframe connections open and browsing the Internet.

I remember when I first started at the hospital I was one of 4 data processing people. We spent every day sorting, printing and distributing data. Rebooting the IBM 370 was a 45 minute job only 2 of us were capable of doing. It was a 4mhz processor with 256k of RAM and a 100mb hard drive that consisted of 5 13.5" magnetic platers. Each component of the computer(processor, I/O controller, HD ETC) was the size of a refrigerator taking up the entire room that had to be kept at 65 degrees.

It had 128 mb back then? My LC only maxed out at 32 meg if I remember right.

But NOTHING beats the humbling experience of programing a TRS80 in BASIC. Lots of time hunched over the keyboard on that thing pounding away entering stuff just to get a single bit of syntax out of place and ruining the whole thing.

Of course that was all made moot when I got my tape drive...

I wrote my first game on a TRS80 in basic. It was a flight simulator and actually pretty good considering.
