| Most likely cause of the "Stop:0x0000007B" error is a boot sector virus. Have you tried booting on your Norton antivirus CD and scanning the hard drive? Could also be a device conflict (two devices using the same resources) You may want to reduce it to min config (remove any unecesary peripherils, ie modem, soundcards etc) then see if it will boot.

I'm in CA myself, so I have to ask: what part of CA are you living in? Myself, I'm in the Sacramento area. I'm from Dodge City originally. The politics, scenery, etc., here in Sacramento are almost 180 degrees different than Dodge City. (I'd help you with the computer stuff but it seems that SGT T. and Co. have it well in hand, and I'm so rusty with my Windows skills anymore that I'd likely mess things up more than anything else.) | It was really a wierd fix Tee I tried reformatting and all that, but I think in my case the pc was overheating cause I took it apart and cleaned everything really good, the took the cover off the video card and it was really dirty so I cleaned it and never had the error code again. Might not be the same in his case I've noticed it's hard to tell from one pc to the next. lol

| Wow well folks what can i say! thank you! the computer is still crashed, but i dicovered that the first option on the Dell win xp reinstall CD, which seemed to be the "clean install" has in fact also a "repair" option that allows to save the data! So that's waht i did, BUT it says unable to finish the reinstall of win xp because the "asms" file is missing on the dell win xp cd. I am bummed. Stuck again. Searched online, and the miicrosft help site has a long explanation as to why it needs the "asms" file, and that if it is missing, you should use the original Win XP CD with hologram...well that is fine, except Dell never sent it when i purchased the computer. the saga of that stupid event still continues i wrote down all the good advice. @ Justin SGT T. if your patience with such an unsavvy amateur is not used up, i am open to more suggestions, especially as to how and where to get the "asms" file, which could perhaps solve the problem. @ Monster, in fact i do have an external USB hard drive...but it is at the bottom of a drawer. I will of course pull it out and see about the XCOPY32 you mentionned. @ Dustin, that was indeed a weird fix. But what are the consequences if i try to pull out that video card ? Interstingly it happened on a very hot day, which fits with your overheating supposition. I now cleaned the inside of the computer, dusted everything. @ Flange, i am in the foothills 30 mn south west of Yosemite National park. I guess the weather is also different from Saco, no? Actually i am from central Europe originally, so i am kind of missing some "real" weather. @ Tee, no no, i didn't get the computer drom Dustin but i saw his posting with the same code, and that is how i luckily discovered Dodgeboard.@ gunnar 1073, the problems began after downloading a new version of windows media player, which didn't work, and in the attempt to recuperate the old version, i made a "restore system to previous date" operation, resulting in jamming and "blue screen of death". Could it be related to the fact that i didn't turn off the anti-virus before doing that "restore system to previous date" thingy? @.....wow this gets so long winded, i better wrap it up still stuck, but a little further on the road to recovery. |

| I'm thinking you have a bigger problem. The unable to read/write a file from the CD is a generic error message basically meaning the install could not complete a task. Possible problems include a hard drive going bad, heat problem(as was mentioned) and my favorite, bad memory. If your PC has more than one stick of memory try taking the one farthest from the processor out and do the reinstall/repair.

| @ Detector hmmm it is really puzzling because when by making a google search for "asms file" it seems it is a very common problem, and yet no simple fix in view in all the posts related to it. what i read on the microsft help page about missing asms file is their suggestion to use an original Win XP CD with the hologram, and not a reburned CD. In fact Dell in my case has only sent their copy of the win xp cd, for reintallation. could it be that this mysterious file "asms" that acording to some does not appear to be on the their CDs neither, is some kind of Authenticated Signature MicroSoft to reduce pirating of it? i still hope your are wrong on that, Detector. But i guess it is a possibilty that your are right. The heat was pretty bad when i used it, and i could hear it suffering, and inside the computer it was very dusty hence reduced cooling. meanwhile, still searching. |
