"blue screen of death" help needed

hi everyone
this is my first post on the dodgeboard

after a restore system to a previous date operation, my computer starts up with a safe mode prompt, and whatever is my slelction, it ends up with the following blue screen:

-------------------------------------
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer

Technical Information:

***Stop:0x0000007B (0xF9678528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000

-------------------------------------

the computer worked properly before the restore system operation, except for a driver which i had been using 2 days before but which had been mistakenly uninstalled.

being not very computer savvy, i would tremedously appreciate for any assistance.

thanx in advance.
mikelum

Windows XP huh? Hmmmm... In my line of work, this is an easy fix. Re-install Windows on top of the old install. When this fails, as it frequently, but not always does, you are going to have to do a clean install. Either option is time consuming, but the first option will allow you to keep your data, whereas the second option will re-format your HD and you will lose everything. Do you have a winXP disk? Or a "recovery" disk?

By re-install on top, I mean to re-install winxp into the already existing C:\windows directory. If thats not possible, then you are going to have to do a clean install.

AH, I hate trying to do this from the other side of the world...
Ok, start the computer as normal, DO NOT insert the cd-rom just yet.
it will do its thing and give you the blue screen. When you get it, THEN insert the cd-rom, and re-start the system. Depending on how your BIOS is configured as far as boot sequence, it SHOULD boot from CD-ROM then and start setting up windows. Really its just a matter of following the on screen instructions. If it does not boot from cd when restarted with the CD-ROM in it, then we need to change your boot sequence from inside the BIOS. Got it?
