usb

I did try looking in the device manager--no yellow flags. The usb hub was a 2.0 and I bought another one with an external power source and it didn't work either.
As for the missing dll file. At the time, I posted the question on the Smart Computing web site. No one had exactly the same error message, but I did get the suggestion to copy the contents of the cd onto the hard drive and then run the exe file. I couldn't get the cd to copy onto the drive and put the whole project on the back burner.
As to getting a new cd burner, I've got a sony vaio computer with a flat screen and computer built into the back of the screen. I'm not sure whether replacment drives are even available for this machine and since the usb drives seem rather squirley I'm not sure an external drive would be the answer either.

Red face Solved?

Solved...at least the initial problem, I think. Simple enough when I got a message that my hard drive was full. What? How could that be. I don't have a lot of hard drive space left--about 3 gig on a partitioned drive, but I've been pretty careful with it. Checked the trash and had an aha moment. Because I used the windows wizard to write the first unsuccessful cd, I deleted the files which then went to the trash bin. The next time I tried with the slower write speed, I was already too short on space. That's not to say I don't have any remaining problems in the areas I mentioned, but at least I wrote one successful cd. Thanks for all the suggestions. Hope this helps someone else.

just remember you have to have twice as much room free on your HD compared to the data being burnt.

IE..to burn a CD with the full 720MB you have to have about 1.5gb (1440mb) free space for the cache.

I had the same problem not long ago I was using colored discs and my burner would not burn to them it would open the disc to begin burning and then close shortly after saying errors reported, trashing the disc in the process. I tried just some normal "imation" discs shortly there after and it worked fine.

If that dosent help I would go for a new drive.

hope that helps...
