ms UPDATE Merry-Go-Round

As is usual, some MS plaster came in to help patch the holes in my swiss chees... er Winders Operating System. As a good little MS user, I installed it but am NOT READY to restart my confuser. I supposed that some sheeple need to be reminded to restart, so they installed a popup allowing me to "restart now" or "restart later" but I don't want this popup to remind me any longer. AND I don't want to inadvertantly click the "now" button should it sneak up immediately before an intentional click.

The onliest thing I like about microsoft is that it is now proven to be possible to name one's company after "one's" sex organ.

How Do I stop this shit?

If I am reading this right , it sounds like you need to shut off AUTO-UPDATE. Only run the windows update when you are ready to shut down and re-boot.

If that what you mean I will see how to do it, depending on your OS.

These pop-ups are there to protect your system. When you ran the update it probably replaced some essential libraries(DLL/OCX) files all window applications use. If they are being used at the time of the update, the only way Windows can replace it is to reboot allowing it to replace the files.

The problem comes in when an install has made changes/references to these library in your registry. Now you have mismatched drivers. That is to say your registry may, for example, reference the library COMDLG.DLL as version 4.15.23 which is the new library added during the update, but the COMDLG.DLL, since it is a commonly used library and in-use at the time it never got replace and now doesn't match the registry settings.

This can cause many applications to puke and damage other files. That why you keep getting the pop-up to reboot because it is very important in protecting your stuff. In short I doubt there is a way to stop it without rebooting.

My machines are set to autoupdate, but only install updates when I shut down. Unless I tell it to go ahead and install, I don't have to worry about a reboot. It's in the options somewhere, just don't remember where. I'll look though.

Under my Automatic Updates button in the Control Panel it's set like this.

Automatic is selected with saturday, and 3:00 AM in the boxes. Since it's a laptop, and I believe my desktop is set the same, they both download at some point in time, but only install when I shut down.
