(6/01/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - So you're at the movies and something's annoying you -- that crying baby or that person behind you talking on their cell phone. Now, peace and quiet may just be a click away.
When you pay big bucks for movies and concessions, you want to get your money's worth. But what happens when things that are out of your control get in the way?
It's the season of the summer blockbusters, when people pour into the cinemas. But what's on the screen is sometimes reduced to mere background sound from all the audience distractions.
"They're not watching the movie," said movie-goer Charles Hernandez. "They're talking on the cell phone, texting each other and it's very distracting."
"Do you ever go to the manager," we asked.
"Generally, we don't go back to those theatres," he responded.
Despite all the amenities of the mega movie houses, there's been a concern over a decline in attendance. It's a nationwide issue, but the Regal Entertainment Group now offers what looks like a remote control to select adult patrons. It's being used at the Marq*E Stadium 23 and IMAX on the Katy Freeway. With a touch of the button...
"They can page us if there's an audio or video problem or a disturbance or even piracy," said Regal Promotions Manager Michael Manny. "There's also a button for 'other,' whatever that might be."
The page signals immediate attention. A manager or usher is dispatched to address the issue. The person reporting the problem remains anonymous.
It's being considered by other theatres as well. Back to Hernandez, he's volunteered to use the device and he won't be afraid to use it either.
"Looking forward to seeing how the experience works," he said.
A pager is offered in each of the Houston Marq*E stadiums. A pager is handed out to a movie-goer in each of its 23 screening rooms. Only responsible adults need apply.
