I live near Manor and Melencamp. There was a litte park right at this intersection that my kids loved going to. It wasn't anything fancy at all, but had a meery go round, monkey bars, and a couple swings I think. It also had an old picnic table under a small canopy. A couple months ago, the picnic table and canopy were removed. No big deal - it was about to fall apart anyway. Then, a few weeks ago, the playground equipment was taken out. We thought, "Wooohoo! They are going to put new equipment in there!" Now they are working in that area...but not replacing the equipment, but they are putting in that walking track. Oh well, we thought - there must be a demand for this track to come through here and take out the playground. So, my wife decides to take the kids on up to the little park on Bell - it has different playground equipment in better shape and better picnic tables - I think this has been called Rocket Park. As they get there...they see all the playground equipment has been taken away from there also - to make room for the walking track! I guess I just don't understand the logic. The one closest to me was old and needed to be replaced or taken out. But why take out both? Is this walking track so important? Could the walkers not walk on the buffalo grass?

My AutoZone Experience

While at the lake we had some problems with the camper. It was hard to start and we had to prime the carburetor with gas to finally get it to go. All the way home it smelled like gas. My uncle told me that I needed a fuel pump.

So I thought I would give A&A Auto a call, because I saw them on DB. He quoted my $40.00 to do the work. I was supposed to pickup the fuel pump.

So, not knowing exactly what engine I have in my RV, I decided to drive the RV down to AutoZone to pick up the pump and then head down to A&A to drop off the RV. When I got to AutoZone in the RV, I smelled gas as I exited...and wondered if Id make it to A&A.

The manager was very cool and looked up the fuelpump. Unsure of what engine I had, he came out to the parking lot to inspect it (from inside the cab) where he could see the engine identification information. Then He went back inside to find the right pump. The computer showed 2 different pumps, so he went back out to the RV to verify what the pump looked like.

That's when it happened, he found the problem. He said "Man it's not your fuel pump, it's your fuel-line that's bad!" A flex fitting had deteriorated and was leaking gas all over the engine and the ground. He said "You can't drive this like this, you're going to blow up!"

So he went back inside, found the fuel line and crawled under my RV, in the AutoZone parking lock and proceeded to install it. He was soaked with gas because gas was pouring out from the lines and was all over the parking lot as well. He got the line replaced.

Not only did he save me the 63.00 for a fuel pump I did not need, but he found the problem and corrected it right on the spot, then refused to accept any money for doing the work. I tried to give him a $20 bill, but he wouldn't take it. Just charged me a few dollars for the line. I then bought a bunch of other things; oil, filter, air....to try and make up for all his efforts and the gas drenched clothes.

So this is a BIG THANK YOU! to Allan (unknown last name) the manager at Auto Zone, for going way beyond the call of duty to help a customer.

The RV is running perfect.

Learned that farmers can expense items at a 100% at tax time today.

Spoke with a local car salesman in town and he was reeling to me about how much he sells to farmers during tax time.

Seems a couple months before April, farmers and anyone in agriculture starts to figure out what they own IRS. Anyway, with the money they guesstimate they will need to pay, they simply go out and buy things like big huge trucks. Then they tack that on their tax return.

IRS code allows farmers to expense the sale at a 100% against their taxes that year. So if you buy a $50K super duty truck, you can deduct that from your taxes at $50K!!!!!

Us regular people and other non agriculture related businesses cannot to that! There is a graduated scale of depreciation you apply to your taxes in increments over several years. However, farms get carte blance treatment at a 100% deduction the same year!!!

It is appalling as it is unfair.

The more I look into tax affairs for big businesses, corporations, and the tax shelter foundations and cherities they all make, I see all of these wonderful little loop holes these businesses have made congress give them.

With all of these deductions and expensed purchases, I am surprised taxes are paid at all!!! In fact, I am surprised this country manages to keep going with all of the tax loop holes for big industry. Big business was supposed to pay for the majority of the operations of this country. Yet I see a different story entirely:

The way I see things, the only people I know who have to pay taxes in full who do not have a say in government and who get stiffed year in and year out are the regular citizens.

That's right. You and me. We regular working stiffs get the royal stiff one eyed moisture missle shaft and have to pay year in and year out at full price with no reprieve in sight.

No taxation without representation people. Our country was founded upon that general principle and believe me when I tell you that we have no one representing us in this country.

Our elected government represents only the BIG BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY who pays for their expensive campaigns. We citizen publics are only pandered to during election years and it is a limp wristed pandering at that.

No taxation without representation. Remember this well.

LEARN IT, LIVE IT, LOVE IT, DEMAND IT.

KABUL—The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a small Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.

Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

Hundreds of Afghans attended a demonstration in Kabul on Monday to protest the plans of Florida pastor Terry Jones, who has said he will burn copies of Islam's holy book to mark the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Afghan protesters chanted "death to America," and speakers called on the U.S. to withdraw its troops. Some protesters threw rocks at a passing military convoy.

Military officials fear the protests will likely spread to other Afghan cities, especially if the event is broadcast or ends up on Internet video.
Mr. Jones, head of the 50-member Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., said in a statement that "We understand the General's concerns. We are sure that his concerns are legitimate." Nonetheless, he added, "We must send a clear message to the radical element of Islam. We will no longer be controlled and dominated by their fears and threats."
Mr. Jones has been denied a permit for the demonstration, but has said he plans to go forward with the protest.

Rev. Stephanie Sapp, spokeswoman for the center, said no one from the Pentagon or other federal agencies had expressed concern or asked that the event be canceled. She did say that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had discussed security measures.
Pentagon officials said they were not aware that any Defense officials have reached out directly to Mr. Jones. But military officers said they hoped that Gen. Petraeus's statement—an unusual move since military commanders rarely get involved in politics—would convince Mr. Jones to change his plans.

Gen. Petraeus declined to elaborate on the nature of the threats or violence that could occur, but westerners in Afghanistan have been warned away from restaurants and other public places amid the rising tensions.

Other senior military leaders echoed Gen. Petraeus commentsMonday. Lt. Gen. William Caldwell, who oversees the effort to train Afghan security forces said he was informed of the planned Florida protests several days ago by a senior minister in the Afghan government.

Gen. Caldwell said many Afghans do not understand either the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment or the fact that President Barack Obama can't simply issue a decree to stop Mr. Jones from his demonstration. Military officials said they were not trying to deny Mr. Jones his right to free speech, but feared he was not thinking about the consequences of his actions.

"There is no question about First Amendment rights; that is not the issue," Gen. Caldwell said. "The question is: What is the implication over here? It is going to jeopardize the men and women serving in Afghanistan."
Zuma Press Pastor Terry Jones, of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., says he will burn copies of the Quran

Military officials also fear that if video of the Quran burning is broadcast in Afghanistan, tensions could rise between NATO forces and the Afghan military and police. Allegations of mishandling the Quran have interrupted Afghan security training at least twice this year, Gen. Caldwell said.

In one instance, a Quran fell to the ground when an American officer opened a locker during an inspection of Afghan trainees' barracks. The rumor quickly spread that the officer had thrown it to the ground, angering the trainees at the camp. "He quickly apologized, but rumors took off like wildfire," Gen. Caldwell said. "It was so hard to get the misperception turned around we stopped all training for the rest of the day."

Reports about the Quran have set off violent protests before. A report in Newsweek, later retracted, that a U.S. interrogator at the Guantanamo Bay prison had flushed a Quran down a toilet set off riots in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Interesting History

They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families
used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken &
Sold to the tannery.......if you had to do this to survive
you were "Piss Poor"

But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't
even afford to buy a pot......they "didn't have a pot to
piss in" & were the lowest of the low

The next time you are washing your hands and complain
because the water temperature isn't just how you like it,
think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about
the 1500s:

Most people got married in June because they took their
yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by
June.. However, since they were starting to smell . ..... .
Brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor.
Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting
Married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man
of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then
all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the
children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so
dirty you could actually lose someone in it.. Hence the
saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water!"

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no
wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get
warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs)
lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and
sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof...
Hence the saying "It's raining cats and dogs."

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the
house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs
and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence,
a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top
afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into
existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other
than dirt. Hence the saying, "Dirt poor." The wealthy had
slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet,
so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their
footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until,
when you opened the door, it would all start slipping
outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way.
Hence: a thresh hold.

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big
kettle that always hung over the fire.. Every day they lit
the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly
vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the
stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold
overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew
had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence
the rhyme: Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas
porridge in the pot nine days old. Sometimes they could
obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When
visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show
off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home
the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests
and would all sit around and chew the fat.

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high
acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food,
causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with
tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were
considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt
bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests
got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination
would Sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days.
Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and
prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen
table for a couple of days and the family would gather
around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake
up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running
out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins
and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the
grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins
were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they
realized they had been burying people alive... So they would
tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the
coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell.
Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night
(the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone
could be saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

My wife and I went to Liberal, KS over labor day week-end. My brother-in-law, Curtis Berens, manages and operates Adventure Bay Family Water Park. We had a blast. We saw folks from Dodge and met families from Garden. They had over 50,000 go thru the gates in about 2 years. The family oriented park cost 3.9 million to build and the attraction more than broke even. Actually $25,500-$30,000 in the black. The water park only used 850,000 gal. of water this summer. During the next year they plan to add a Flowrider and a lazy river.

The city did not issue any bonds for this water park. They saved till they had the money to pay for it.

This family oriented attraction is paid for with a 1/4% sales tax. Last year the city of liberal brought in over $5 million dollars with this tax alone. 60% of this sales tax goes to street improvement and repair.
His Sgt was very respectful and kept his manner also when I got "bitchy" with him. Even though they could not help me with the situation (damn crappy laws we have to abide by) I wish to thank them for the way they handled it even if I didn't.
