What Would YOU do?

Suppose you've been seeing a Lost and Found ditty in the paper about a lost pet. You happen to see [a] little fur baby matching the description lying dead, obviously killed by a vehicle next to the road. Would you call knowing it may not be news they wished to hear? Or would you just keep your info to yourself and hope it's not the same beloved pet?

Everyone is different about these things. I lost a pet after 16 years. It was and still is heartbreaking. I searched for months. I spent many afternoons going to the pound looking for my pet, driving the streets, calling shelters, looking at every dog that looked like mine for months. I became so well known they were calling me in to come look at dogs. For me, I just wanted to know if my beloved pet was safe. If he was dead then at least I would not worry that maybe someone had him tied up where I coulodn't see him or had him locked up in a house where he couldn't run.

Well I never found him - he was never picked up dead or as a stray. He just vanished. I would have wanted to know. I scoured every county shelter there was. Sometimes folks pick up animals take them home - they don't work out and take them to the shelter - might not always be the same city the animal came out of.

I would have wanted to lay my precious pet to rest. I never got to find him or bury him........ what I keep in my heart is his memory, his companionship, and his picture in my purse........... He was a wonderful friend he deserved a "final" ending........ not just an unknown..... it still bothers me.......

I say IF you know it's the person's animal......... tell them if you know them. It really is the kinder thing to do. Then if there are kids involved the parents can choose what to tell the kids. As an adult I would have wanted to know. I know every dog catcher in town and I had cops on the look out for him too but he just flat vanished. It's a painful thing but even your pets deserve some dignity - would you leave a person on the street? I think not. We usually don't know whose pet it is - but I always call the shelter just for the dignity of having the pet removed. It's just wrong to leave dead animals in the street.

I do so appreciate your heartfelt reply dear TK... of course it was I who saw the pet earlier in the week and I have tussled with whether or not to call. I have cats...and I love them dearly....I'm just not sure I'd want to know and therein lies my delima. It was the siamese kitty that's been in this weeks paper...and while I cannot be sure it is the same kitty, I want to believe it was NOT the same one. He/She was a longhaired Siamese. The kitty has since been removed, and was the day after I saw him/her. I guess I am saying I am hoping I am wrong. I just do not have what it takes to make such an uncomfortable call. I know, I am a coward

Then the answer is - what would you want done? I laid my cats to rest after 16 years as well. 16 years seem to be hard on my animals - LOL Took me 7 years to have another cat. Which I found at the shelter while looking for my dog. Now I'm on a hiatus from dogs....... I figger in 7 years I'll be too old to take on another dog. If you are a friend of thiers you probably know if they would want the info or not. If you are just an aquaintance........ I would leave it alone. If they have searched for the cat - I'm sure they probably know by now. If they didn't check with animal control.......... they didn't want to know the outcome. It's a hard thing to do, I held my breath each time I would ask them to check the list of dead animals they picked up. Good luck!! You will do the right thing - good folks always do!!

I would call them. I too have a story like Tex and I even dreamed about my beloved pet. I was so upset over my pet because it could have been prevented. It was a case of someone at the pound wanting the pet instead of giving it to me. Still to this day kinda upsets me some, not as bad as it did back then, however, I couldn't have taken care of my dog anyhow, thats why it was at the pound. Heres the story, I let a friend take care of it since I had to move from my home, and my new home..well you understand. Well my freind a few months later went to jail, and their girlfriend was taking care of it. The dog ended up in the pound one day, why I don't know, and instead of the pound letting me have it, they stated to me that the owner had to surrender the pet. Well it was at least 20 days by then! What happened was someone at the pound wanted the dog and they took it. I found out because this dog had one of those chips in it that could track them down, and I knew the pound didn't put him down because if they had, the chip would have read so. Anyways someone gave me some info on it...finally, so I knew then that he wasn't dead, which made me feel better. Still was dirty how the whole thing was handled, but at least he was safe and I was happy for that. Boy I raised some hell in the pound over that BS!!! I walked in there and said....Where is so and so (the guy who had the dog) You should have seen the faces on those people! HAHA! They told me he didn't work there which I knew damn well that he did. In fact he was sitting right there! hahaha!!! This underhanded BS was all pulled when Doc Champlin was out of town, and I let him know about it when he got back. But anyways....You should tell the pet owner, give them a piece of mind.

See ya!
