| I coached Pop Werner in San Diego back when I was in the Navy, 13 year olds. It was one of the greatest, and at times the worst, thing I ever did. Loved the kids, hated the parents with a passion. We had maybe 4 parents show up to the games. Us coaches had to supply all the rides to paractice and the games, which we were not supposed to do but it was either that or the kids could not play. At the end of the season we had a big dinner, my ship donated a big chunk of change and the cook prepared the food, and every parent, along with some grandparents and siblings and who knows else, showed up. 20 kids on the team, 200 people showed up for food. The head coach got drunk and during his speech pointed out the accomplishments each child did during the season, and sarcastically thanked their parents for being there to cheer them on. He was so mad he could barely talk without crying. He would show pictures to some of the parents and say "Remember when he scored this touchdown? Now you do." I still get a sick feeling when I think about it.
