Wordy...I agree with you totally...(cough, choke...damn that was hard to say) but it lacks professionalism to talk about your salary and such. The guy that asked was unprofessional and the guy answering basically went to his level. Most companies do have a thing about not discussing your pay with other employees, even those in other dept's, nothing good can come of it. Despite how much of a f**ker the guy was being your friend could have scored some professional points and just said.."we'll I make enough to pay my rent but I have to move on to make more." LOL.

Have a good weekend!

Unions get away with publishing wages.

To his credit this was actually my friend's first real job and he'd never been approached with this question. It caught him off guard and he didn't really think about hte consequences of his answer.

That's why his response was - F*@k em???? Your friend needs to learn you NEVER burn your bridges with a company if you can help it - never know when someone or some company will have something to do with a job you want. I can tell he's young and rather inexperienced. Just a reminder - a degree don't make ya smart!! Hopefully he'll learn from this and not feel like he came out on top - cause he didn't

Because in unions there is no room for recognizing competition and rewarding someone for doing better than the next guy. Unions negotiate the wage for the workers and everyone gets the same plus time and all that but it promotes people doing the minimum.....The Army also publishes their wages....lol.

It's a little bit of a maturity issue. Some employee handbooks state clearly that discussing salary won't be tolerated. As your friend moves up the ladder a bit and spends a bit more time in his profession, he'll probably understand. Likely, this conversation won't ever go any further, cuz it sounds like the purchasing agent isn't smart enough to take it any further and your friend, Wordy, is on his way out anyway.

MeGuess is the friend was/is/always-will-be (only) fit for bureaucratic service.

I also agree with most everybody. Two things I live by when it comes to my job------

Never discuss my wage/salary
Never have relations with a co-worker

They both lead to trouble
