| Hey welome to DB...... OTC Since I don't live in Dodge - I haven't participated here - I had a side conversation bout Weezie - But I actually don't know what thrash metal or any of that stuff is. Don't make me a bad girl - just makes me a country girl!! There is room for any kinda listenin - in a parade I have heard some really good bands and some I was glad the truck was on the move at a fast clip!! Just a reminder tho - in music as in any business - ya never knnow when your worst critic is gonna be your next paycheck - calm down and realize your music is not gonna be for everyone. It's good to know that kids are actually "bustin thier asses" instead of waitin for thier folks to just provide what they want. Musicians are very passionate about thier craft as they should be............ relax......... success will come to ya or it will become a good hobby for ya.............. Good Luck!!

| OK, now that I've come off as a real jerk let me explain why. First off, I started playing guitar when I was 11 and am now 50. Over the years I've played in so many bands I lost count long ago. I've played pretty much everything from country to heavy metal, and at least 90% of the bands were cover bands. That means I've spent an awful lot of time learning to play what other musicians play. So I'm the last person anyone wants to challenge to play what they play. I do it very well even with my Silvertone. Second, it may not seem like it now but I'm am doing you all a favor by being brutally honest. A band need good honest opinions and lets face it, you're not going to get it from your friends/fans or the drunks in the bars you play. I wish I'd had more friends that were able to give honest criticism instead of being suck-ups that only say what they think you want to hear. Play a star search some time, which by the way I have, and you'll get the brutal truth. And you'll need it. The total package:Also one of the keys to success is not only knowing how to play, and being damn good at it, but knowing when to play it. I commend you for being able to play your own "original songs" but there is a time and place for original music, and a public parade is not it. Now if you've got an album to promote, you have that music on the air or you're old timers then it's appropriate, but to be brutally honest no one but your friends, the one that don't give you honest criticism anyway, give a crap about your original songs. They want to hear and judge your talent based on something they are familiar with. Also part of the total package is the group. A band that relies on one or two really good musicians to pull the rest along will be in for a disappointment in time. Having the balls to face a fellow band member/friend and say you suk, you need to either get your crap together or move on is the mark of serious musicians. Any thing less and you're only fooling yourselves. Equipment. You darn right you deserve the best. In fact it's a must. But you don't want it to become a crutch. That is to say if you can't play on crappy equipment and sound good then you don't have skillz and it will come back to bite you. I had a humbling experience years ago at a party when this roofer picked up at crappy old guitar that belonged to a guy at the party and made that thing sound like a million bucks. Thats talent that relies on skillz and not thousands of dollars worth of special effects. What humbled me the most was this guy now roofed for a living because he didn't have what it takes to be successful in the music business. The day of some big producer dropping by the bar for a beer and signs you up after hearing you is long gone. Being successful in the music business is very hard work and a lot of luck. You've got to be different. Of course having connections helps as well. It takes the total package and thats where most bands lack what it takes. I may sound like a total butt but I assure you, years from now, you'll wish there was more like me. I call'em like I see and hear'em when it comes to bands. I only heard less than 5 minutes as you passed by but I learned a lot about your band in that short time. The drummer was good the rest was average the sound was excellent for a parade. I had no idea the song you played was an original because it sounded like any other hundreds of thousands of metal songs to me. I'm quite sure the vast majority of the parade goers felt the same way. I know you're thinking we don't give a carp what those people thought but if that was the case why play the parade? By the way I call any double time metal music thrash or speed metal. There's nothing wrong with playing your own music for your own satisfaction, but don't be surprised when that all you accomplish in your music career. Brutal truth is top 40 is where the moneys at and it take lots of money to be successful. Out of all the types of music I've played I prefer 80's metal. For me it just has the right challenge and outlet for expression. Lastly I want to say I hope I haven't dampened your out look on music. It's a very rewarding pursuit and your worst nightmare all rolled up into one. Surrounding yourselves with friends that are brutally honest is your best bet if you're really serious. If not you're only fooling yourself. PS: I still say name the time and place and I'd be happy meet your challenge.

| WRONG DETECTOR LATINO - TEXMEX IS WHERE THE MONEY IS AT. I played a show in Texas not long ago. It was a huge club with two sides. Country Side and a Latino side. I thought we had a good crowd of about 100 people @ 10 bucks a head. We paid for ourselves. Then I walked next door to the latino Side (which was huge) and it was standing room only with about 1000 patrons. I asked what the cover was and my jaw dropped when they said $30 bucks a head at the door, no couples. Thirty Grand just at the door. I would say Latino bands make somewhere between 6k and 15k per night, if they are even just fairly known in the area. I had an chance to play Bass for a mexican band one night at a concert that featured Country and Latino music. Their player had gotten sick(drunk) just before they were to go on. They found an interp for me and they asked if I could cover their stuff. I said "Sure" I hear most changes comeing anyway. I played a full hour of songs I had never heard, with guys that could only look at me and shake their heads with big smiles because we could not converse. It was a blast for an hour. Anyone know of a Latino band without a Bass player, give me a Holl'a. As far as the challenge, this will be interesting. I have never heard of the OTC band , but please send me a tape/cd of your music and give me a 20 minutes to listen to it. There hasn't been anything in 30 years I haven't been able to play as I am sure the other long time musicians on here feel the same way. Can your songs be downloaded? I don't do Disco, I don't do Rap and I don't do Texmex. Speaking of which. I've been told Disco has many flavors and some are even called "sophisticated." Sophistication is in the ear of the listener. My experience has been you can copy CC(Poison)'s guitar sound and pretty much play just like him. In contrast, you can copy Rex Carrol(Stryper)'s guitar sound all you want, but it's going to take skillz to play anywhere close. In many cases getting the sound right is all it takes. In a select few sound has little to nothing to do with it only the skillz. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: If you play Mozart on an electric guitar with heavy distortion, delay, reverb and a wha-wha pedal is it still considered classical music by a listener? No, more than likely it would be labeled metal. If you play Motley Crue on a classical guitar is it still considered metal? Yes it is.

Yes, it was a generalization. One that none of you would know the difference between. I later clarified this with all the genres since we had to get nit picky. You can now shut your mouth hwytwit. |
