Dodge City Days -- Ideas for next year

I want to start this thread to get ideas for changes, improvements, ideas for Dodge City Days next year. Maybe someone with some say will read this and see what is being suggested.

Here are a few of mine:

1. Portapotties for the parade.
2. More covered spots to eat at the craft fair with tables and chairs.
3. Rodeo was great as always!
4. Trollies to take people from the parking areas to the events.
5. Some music or something playing during the wait for numbers at the Civic Center. (maybe a slide show of photos from the week)
6. Would love to see a street dance downtown.

Now I will see what you guys think....

I don’t care how you decorate one of those things; it’s going to look strange going down the street in a parade.

Great idea Dodgegal!

Here are a few of my Dodge City Days concerns.

1. Road construction.
Why is it like clock work come Dodge City Days we can be assured that driving will be a mess? It always seems we decide to make driving in dodge the worst it can be during this event? If anything we should have a dress-up-dodge project before Dodge City Days to make dodge as appealing as possible to visitors.

2. Parking.
106 degrees outside and you need to walk 5 blocks to get downtown or the park.

3. Classic Car Show.
Great as usual.

4. Treasure Hunt.
How about one for everybody, put on by Dodge City with clues posted at locations where even tourist can get involved? One that deals with local history and requires visiting various historical locations, as clues, to get the next clue. Kinda like Geocaching. One clue leads to another clue. Sponsors of the hunt could get their establishments in the hunt.

This would give you a sense of progress and accomplishment as you solved each clue.

Course not bein there for 3 years I can't say but it sounds like not much has changed. I think the treasure hunt is a cool idea. The porta potties are just a mess that has to be cleaned up with tax money. Porta potties I think are there for the strawberry fest - over by the old bank - potties for a 1 hour parade - prob not sumthin I would want. Prob not a place I would go to if I were there either - just too much nastiness with those things.

Change the date to have "cool weather"!
Call it off, and have a week long Oktoberfest instead with 50 cent beer! Permit adults to enter the "mutton busting"!! Rotate the celebration between Texie's, Muffie's, and Weezie's house! Have the bulls model their "fries" before the big event at Boothill! Have the State send in National Guard troops to help set up more DUI checkpoints so the Rodeo and other events don't sell ANY beer!

How about having the Dodge City Police, instead of busting people after the fact for drinking and driving by setting up saturation checkpoints. Look at it like more of a goodwill public service and set up booths at events with a free public awareness breath-alyzer test. If you fail the test, arrangements will be made to get you home safely without you driving. It would make the Police Dept look better in the community by doing this instead of the attitude that they are just out to bust the drinkers. Maybe even local business could sponsor the rides home for those that drank a few too many.

Not my original idea, but a co-workers that I might have expanded on.

Sounds like a good idea in theory...but just how many people that are drunk enough to be arrested for DUI would voluntarily walk up to a booth with a bunch of cops to take a breath test? It is the drinker's responsibility to moderate their intake if they have to drive...something of this nature is a thing that we should not have to remind people of as they are leaving an event or bar.

I would agree it would be a neat idea if a taxi service or car dealership did come forward and say they would donate rides. Dunno what kind of liability that would open them up to in case something happened, though. I think most of us would rather see people getting home safely and not being a possible hazard to others rather than to be out looking to arrest someone.

I would think that if it was highly publicized that they weren't there to arrest, and it was for informational purposes. Maybe there are some people that don't realize how many drinks it takes to be considered "too drunk to drive." I think this would be a big Public Relations Dream to do something like this. It would do several things at one time.

1. Educate people as to how much is too much to drink.
2. Show the "good" side of the police department.
3. Keep drunk drivers off the road.

I would like to see more emphasis on prevention and cure & less on crime and punishment. Some cities are awash in available taxis that are driven by foreigners who speak little English.....

Waid'da'minnet...

How'z about taking some whine-not-dodge money and buying a big bunch of cheap Nissans, paint them yeller and staff them with wetbacks? 2 bucks to anywhere in town. It'd work if there was a reasonable supply of Dodge Drivers.
