Spinning it around is to be expected. Your rebuttal is noted and I've read a few online editorials from the right but it does not address that the intelligence estimate directly contradicts the adminstration's assertions that things are better. From army's favorite newsource (MSNBC)
"Senior officials confirmed a classified report concludes the Iraq war has worsened the terror threat, though the administration has said the opposite"
The second biggest terrorist attack on US soil involved US grown terrorist btw, the threat is still there.

Consider for the moment that they care about their fellow citizens. Since this report supposedly involves the consensus of all 16 government intelligence and therefore people leaking have some direct knowledge of this administration's conduct in prosecuting this "war"-leaking this report to those news organizations was away to ensure this thing did not get buried in the Bush whitehouse. This leak shows the President is not being upfront on a matter involving our security. The constitutional guard for a free press has been used by both parties over the years. Leaking bad news about a failed policy is not endangering American lives, it's allowing our system to work.

Time will tell if it served him well or not. If it shakes some of the rust off of the democrats then it will be a good thing in the long run. remember, he is the master politician.
