Subject: KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:::::

As you open your pockets for yet another natural disaster, keep these facts in mind:

Marsha J. Evans, President and CEO
of the American Red Cross... salary for year ending 06/30/03 was $651,957 plus expenses.

Brian Gallagher, President of the United Way receives a $375,000 base salary, plus numerous expense benefits.

The Salvation Army's Commissioner Todd Bassett receives a salary of only $13,000 per year (plus housing)
for managing this $2 billion dollar organization.

No further comment necessary

(I also heard that the Red Cross sends bills for everything that they "give" out!

Thanks for the info LG...I have boycotted the Red Cross for years though, so they don't get a dime or drop of blood from me. It all goes back to when I was in the military and donated blood, at that time they told me that since I was donating blood that if anybody in my immediate family needed blood that they could get it from the Red Cross free of charge. Well, jump ahead about 8 years and my Dad needed blood after he was diagnosed with cancer and was going through some of his treatments and surgeries. I told my mom before the surgeries that the red cross said that he should get blood for free because I donated many pints while in the army.

Well, the Red Cross was in no hurry to get any blood for my Dad when he needed it and we ended up buying the blood from the hospital. After that, I have nothing to do with the Red Cross.

Something that pissed me off about the red cross is right after 9/11 they kept begging for blood days after the incident. People were lining up to donate. I started wondering what do they need all this blood for most of the people in the towers were dead and didn't need blood. Latter I read that they had to throw a bunch of it away because it became outdated. That's just wrong.

Ya know having been a blood bank nurse for many years and a corp cadet (yeah that's a tamborine girl ) as a kid I have to chime in I'm not trying to be a smartie - but I know how frustrating it can be if ya only have part of the truths about some of the things we just never ask about.

First - the Sally Commish - is clergy - Salvation Army is a church whose mission is to help the needy. It's not just a Red Cross or United Way. Look at the Sally flag - Fire and Blood. They are a church that follows it's mission of saving lost souls and helping those in need.

Next - the call for blood during the 9/11 - was and remains during times of disaster a way for people to feel they have "done something" Packed cells are only good for 35 days - Plasma can be frozen for years. Platelets are good for 5 days if they are constantly rotated and unless you process that unit of blood within 3 or 5 hours you can only salvage plasma and red cells. You lose the platelets.

Bubba - any "Blood Assurance Plan" such as you describe is good if you donate once a year at least to that plan - it will cover the cost of the unit - bout $50 but it won't cover lab, recruitment, cross matching, and processing - bout another $100 or more depends on the hospital. Hospitals exchange "credits" - bout $50 - $75 per unit usually if there is a BAP.
Historically the Red Cross touted such a program but usually required "stong arming" to come across. If someone told you that you could donate ONCE and be covered for life - you were talking to someone that didn't know how Blood Banking works. It is a business and most Red Cross employees don't understand how a Blood Assurance Program works cause theirs sucks so bad, AND the Red Cross is a VERY strange place to be a nurse. I lasted all of 6 months. They were idiots. I worked in BB for 7 years at UTMB in Galveston - wanna see a Blood Assurance Program that works - go donate there.... Red Cross can't even draw blood down here - the only place Kansas Red Cross can go is north Texas and Gulf Coast Regional has been tryin to run them out of Texas for years.......still trying Most BAP's let you cover you and a family if you are single - you and your family if your not. Course we always would let folks donate any time toward a BAP for someone else or another family. We always gave them card or sent it to the family - and again it was good for one year. Bubba you got shammed............lots of folks do tho - cause that's how some blood banks are.

If you want to open another can of worms just discuss local charities in Dodge! The one I would trust is Pastor Dave Clipson and the Friendship Meals but what ive seen and heard first hand of people who had to deal with the Manna House...Hopefully its gotten better. I had to laugh when Pastor Dave first started the meals. He was getting flack from some of the other "charity" outfits who got concerned and suddenly were calling for meetings, and during one of the first meetings when they asked Dave what requirements he had established that had to be met for people to eat a good free meal (donations accepted of course) and when he told me his reply to them was "Requirements? Is being hungry count as being a requirement?" I was LMMFAO! Dave is good people in my book!

Origins: According to Forbes magazine's reporting for the fiscal year ending June 2003, the total revenue and top executive compensation (including benefits) for the three large charitable organizations referenced above were as follows:

Organization Total revenue Top executive Compensation
American National
Red Cross $2.9 billion Marsha Evans $651,957
United Way
of America N/A Brian A. Gallagher $500,768
Salvation Army $3.0 billion W. Todd Bassett $166,850

Financial figures for these organizations are difficult to compare directly for a number of reasons. The United Way of America, for example, is not one large organization, but a body that coordinates 1,400 independent local United Way member organizations, each separately incorporated and governed by local volunteers. As well, the Salvation Army is classified by the Internal Revenue Service as a "church or convention or association of churches" and is therefore not required to file Form 990 (Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax) reporting with the IRS.

Speaking Of Charities

The little lady and I have cleaned out our closets and have about 5 boxes of clothes (some new with tags) that need to go somewhere. When I was in Leavenworth we always donated our stuff to the battered woman's shelter. Are there any suggestions as to where I could donate the stuff here to ensure it might get a good home????

THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!!

I do like Sally's over Goodwill - I know Sally's does give stuff away when needed - they give vouchers.......But if there is a womans shelter - I would send stuff there - ya know that it goes directly to those that need. I must admit sometimes those that work Sally's seem to get all the good stuff. Call the Womens Crisis line to find out. If your choices are minimal - ya might call Pastor Dave Clipson.......he does alot with folks in need......those are my suggestions. Good luck - and God Bless
