Just a quick comment to bring this thread back to the front page. Also, a thought about the turkey and the fixins. I just thought that if a family is needy enough to warrant our help, they might not have all the kitchen utensils or kitchen space to cook and serve up a good dinner. I remember that Dillon's deli used to sell completely prepared turkey dinners with all the fixins where at most all you had to do was warm things up before serving. If I remember right, they were different sizes with different prices so you could get it sized right for the size of the family. I don't know what everybody else would think, but I thought it might be something to check into.

I personally think most woould be able to fix a meal - after all they probably do lots of things that stretchh a food dollar. A roaster can be made withh a cake pan and foil..... I think you can help more families if ya just supply the food. If it's utensils your lookin for, buying disposable roasting pans is cheaper than payin for the prep. A 5 lb bag of potatoes is much cheaper than havin someone cook them for ya. Just my opinion. What ever the pros think is fine with me.

Just got back from Dillon's and they are selling them again this year. Dinner for two includes: 1-1.5 lbs Rotisserie turkey breast, 2 lb mashed potatoes, 1 lb turkey gravy, 1 lb dressing, 1 lb cranberry celebration, and 4 hawaiian rolls for 26.99. Then they have 3 other sizes, the large being: 14-16 lb turkey, 4 lbs mashed potatoes, 4 lbs dressing, 2 - 30 oz. turkey gravy, 2 lb broccoli rice casserole, 2 lb cranberry relish, 2 dz dinner rolls, 2 - 10" pumpkin pies for 69.99. Prices seem reasonable to me, especially when it comes to you fully cooked all you do is warm it up. If we go this route, the deli wants a couple of days notice to be able to prepare and the order forms are at the deli.

Bubba - THIS IS AN EXCELLENT IDEA!!!

So here is what I did.

Working from Bubba's suggestion, I called Dillons and talked to Moe, the Manager. They have Whole Dinners that are already cooked, with all the fixins for around $50. They include a whole turkey. I told her that we were hoping to work with a budget around $1000.00. They are prepared to help us. If we pre-pay, they will order enough turkeys and food to feed 20 families. They liked the cause and said that they would match us $100.00 on a thousand dollar order. So that equals 22 needy families fed, if we come up with $1000.00. We will let the Crisis Center buy them so we can avoid the tax. Keeps getting better, thanks to everyones suggestions!!

Don't be sorry! Thats more than most. $25.00 is extremely generous. We're happy with even $5.00.

Thankyou Jeezweez and everyone else. You are very kind for helping feed a family this Thanksgiving.

Ooh. There's a radio station up here that has a telethon right after Thanksgiving to adopt-a-family for Christmas. Whatever size you want from singles on up to single-parent households with 1 or 2 kids or two-parent households with kids. They run it all day on the radio. They read letters and have telephone interviews. I never make it all the way to work without my eye makeup running. I thought we were poor when I was growing up, but I had no idea some families live like they do - even in this great country!

Put me in for a couple of those dinners!
