Throwing something out there..

First, let me start off by saying any advice is welcome. As I know, y'all won't let me down!

Today, I was approached by a foreign exchange student needing a place to stay. He just showed up on my front porch asking if I knew of anyone who would let him stay the summer. I'm leary of people of anyway, because I am too trusting of a person. It takes a lot to gain my confidence. Anyhow, he gave me information on his program and said he would be in touch later to see if I would help him out.

Right now, he's staying at the Budget Inn. He looked like a foreign exchange student. He's from Finland and had the accent and everything. But is this a scam? I asked him why they, his sponsor and programmer, didn't find him prior lodging. His answer was to learn how difficult it is to live by themselves. Sort of an emersion (sp?) program. Every question I had, he seemed to have a good answer. But most conmen do. So, I'm throwing this scenario to you all. Any questions I should ask if he calls back? It's just strange. And alot of times, if something don't add up, it ain't right!

I never heard of an exchange student not having a sponsor/host family to stay with. The idea of dumping some young person in a foreign country and having them fend for themselves sounds irresponsible to me. I’d recommend telling the guy no and checking out his story. I’d start with DCPD and the SO.

It's definitely an odd story. But I see every day the kids with clothes that don't fit and shoes with holes in the sole that stop by with candy to sell. I have almost asked which store they stole it from. But I was more afraid of the answer.....

My mother-in-law had a foreign exchange student from Germany a year or so ago and he had an in-town sponsor that would check in on him and make sure everything was ok. I have never heard of this emersion program and the sponsor made sure he had somewhere to stay at all times. I'd say something smells fishy here.

I'd definitely check him/foreign exchange program out before I'd let anyone in my door. Contact the LEC to see if they are aware of any current programs like that in town.

It sounds bad to me. I'm not letting any stranger who shows up at my door live with me. I'm with Highway I've never heard of a foreign exchange student who has to find his own place to live.

I'm thinking that they probably have to have a place to stay BEFORE they come here under the program. I go along with everyone else...it's wrong.
