Fishing

Ok............need some help here. I have been fishing for a good portion of my life and just now have come to the realization that I am no good at it. I mostly just catfish (kinda hard to smoke and jig for bass at the same time) and need some pointers......

A) best bait needed (I use turkey livers. I also use crawdads when I catch them, those seem to be hit and miss)

B) local place to fish (I usually go to Lake Chuck at night)

Ok gang, help me out please..............

Dutch, I like to go to Wally world and buy raw shrimp for bait. I peel the shell off and string them on hook and fish on the bottom, which I am sure you do. I like fishing at Clark County lake. I have had real good luck in the past. The lake is real muddy now so it has been slow. Good luck!!

I don't fish much but last fall we went to the little pond by the golf course behind wally world. We caught 9 Catfish (7 of them keepers) in about 2 hours. We were using turkey livers. We went right before dark.

Dutch, it's not about whether you catch anything, or are any good at it! It is all about the peacefulness and nature, and the getting away from the stresses of life!! By the way, I find that a couple of cheesburgers and a six pack are pretty good for bait! And I should know, because my wife says that I am the "Master-baiter"!!

My better half doesn't understand that 6 to 7 hours of fishing, not catching anything but 'squitoes is truly the most relaxing thing I can do. I will sit there and just sit.........watch the birds, listen to the noises, go catch some crawdads and net baby bluegill..........and I am totally relaxed afterward.

Army, you are talking Mariah Hills and I have never caught anything there during daylight........nowwwwwwwwww before they got all up in arms and I used to sneak out there at night..............I would catch a minimum of 8 fish each time. Have to go out there at dusk and try it sometime. Not the same since they drained it.

Dutch, do you ever go to the KDWP web page? Click on fishing, then on fishing reports, then on SW Ks area. It shows all the fishing spots and latest fishing reports. Even Lake Charles and the Mariah pond are listed.

Oh yeah Made, I do go there often, but those reports are really not as reliable as getting first hand info from common folks.

For the past 15-20 years I have mostly fished with a fly rod in streams. I know that streams and SW Kansas are mutually exclusive....but back south when we wanted a good fish fry that meant either bream or catfish.

Catfish bait meant anything with "meat" that stunk. My grandmother raised chickens and ducks so often we used the innards from slaughtered fowl. If we were going to use something else like store bought gizzards or livers we would often buy them a day or two before and leave them out in the sun for a few days (it helps to leave them as far downwind and away from the house as possible).

For bream it was often crickets, grasshoppers, or artificial poppers. My go to "fly" for bream right now is a spider imitation which they can't seem to leave alone. I didn't like jigging for bass unless I was in a boat over structure or at a dam. My favorite non fly bass bait is any gold spinner bait with a single spoon and a green yellow skirt. Easy to fish a spinner while smoking too.

I would often use the pond in my neighborhood in dodge but using topo maps and satellite images like those found on google earth, i would locate farm ponds and go knock on doors asking permission to fish. The answer more often than not was yes. Try it.

I enjoy waiting for winter. Then I head for Lake Charles at DCCC. It is stocked (every two weeks) with some nice trout. Bait: Rainbow power bait by Berkley, or canned corn. Limit is 5 per day. Got to have not only a lic. but a trout stamp also. Trout are abit boney but I fillet them and then grill (wrapped in foil) with onion, pepper and lemon juice.

I think they start stocking the lake in late Oct.

Best Catfish Bait!!!

Probably the best catfish bait that I have used is a stink bait called "Punch". I think Watersports Campground used to sell it and you can get it at some Wal-Mart stores back east. This stuff [b]STINKS[b]. It's not a bad idea to wear rubber gloves when using it. My son used a #4 trebel hook and dropped it into the can of bait and pushed the hook down into the bait with a stick then pulled the hook out at an angle to get a gob on the hook, then use the stick to finish putting it on the hook. This stuff is nasty but it really works.

As far as lakes/ponds go you have Ford County lake, Hain lake, and Clark county. There is also Buckner creek and the Sawlog but you will need permission from the landowners for these.

Enjoy! Fishing is a great excuse to drink Beer!!!!!!
