When I say the wait staff is all the same, that does mean that there are good ones, as well. I do like one of them that has been to a couple establishments, and she does a wonderful job. BUT, once you have a "bad apple", it ruins it for the entire establishment (see prior posts in this thread). I will always try to make a comment and tip well with the wait staff that are good in this community.

As for references, you should be able to tell the caller about work attendance, competence, etc. OR, develop a code that means "this person sucks as a waitress".

I have heard of instances where former employers were sued for giving false recommendation for former employees.

Yep. That's true. You are allowed to ask anything you want. But the former employer is only allowed to give dates of service and starting and ending pay. Our HR person usually can get the former employer to say more....I don't know how she does it - I don't want to know!!! I just like to get the report after she's finished!
