| Rebels continue march to state title HAYS There was no fibbing. Andy Skinner could not tell a lie. When the South Gray senior put up his final shot of Wednesday night’s game against Centralia in the Class 1A state tournament, he didn’t think it had much of a chance. “Truthfully, I didn’t think it was going in,” Skinner said. “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.” If it was luck, it sure made the defending champion Rebels look good in their 2008 state opener at Fort Hays State University’s Gross Memorial Coliseum. Skinner’s shot banked off the glass and through the hoop with 2.3 seconds remaining, giving South Gray (23-3) a 43-41 win in a rematch of last year’s state title game. In a game the Rebels had to find a way to crawl back into, the seasoned veterans did just that. South Gray trailed 23-16 at halftime after Centralia (21-3) ended the first half on a 9-0 run. All that came with the Rebels’ leading scorer, senior Eli Applegate, on the bench with his second foul. The Rebels slowly would get back in it, pulling with 33-32 at the end of the third quarter and eventually leading 40-35 with 2:57 to play. But the Panthers trimmed the margin and knotted the score at 41 when senior Derek Rempe scored with nine seconds remaining. But Skinner took the inbounds pass and was oblivious to his coach trying to signal a timeout. The senior drove down the center of the court, put up a one-handed runner and banked it off the glass. It found nothing but the bottom of the net with 2.3 seconds remaining giving the Rebels a 43-41 advantage. “I wanted a timeout, and the kids didn’t see it,” said South Gray coach Mark Applegate. “Andy does a lot of different things for us, and we work on it in practice.” This time, practice made perfect. “I just caught the ball and tried to do something with it,” said Skinner, who finished with 9 points. Senior Clyde Redger was the only South Gray player to score in double figures with 15. He also had seven rebounds. Junior Ben Steinlage led Centralia with 28 points and seven boards. South Gray will face Colony-Crest (25-1), a 56-30 winner over Greensburg, in Friday’s 8:15 p.m. semifinal.
