Someone mentioned Fredericksburg.. its a cool place to go, about 80 miles from San Antonio into the Hill Country. Its a small German community with a cool downtown shopping area with a lot of unique stores and a small microbrewery as well. Several authentic German restaurants, and probably the most famous for being the birthplace and hometown of Admiral Chester Nimitz.. They have the Nimitz Museum there which is a GREAT museum if youre into World War II. In fact, they have one of the Japanese mini-subs that was lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Austin is only an hour and a half north of San Antonio on I-35 and is the state capitol of Texas and you can visit the Capitol building, plus 6th Street in Austin is famous for strange shops and bars.. Keep Austin Weird! |

| Gee I missed this all together. Mia Tiera................ Farmers market. Riverwalk, tours, Alamo............ what NOT to do in SA? Awsome place hook into the site on the web and plan your trip before you go. Can't think of one place I have been in SA that was not worth going to again. Austin is also worth the trip. SA tho is so much richer in history - to me. Enjoy your trip - sorry I was slow but looks like there are some tried and true SA experts on here already. Or some true Texas wannabes.................. no matter all expertise is accepted round here! Everyone's a Texan at heart!!! LOL

| Aw gee - I really don't know bout the "hidden" places. I play tourist when there and hang at the Alamo for hours!! I did enjoy the tour busses - they leave from the Minger or Menger hotel (supposedly haunted) right next to the Alamo. I really enjoyed the tours - they used to have a mission tour and a tour that went to the brewery, discussed all the aquaducts and stuff. Pretty interesting. Course the best thing bout SA is the tight jeans, the cold beer and the riverwalk!!! Be careful bout cruising the river walk at night in the un populated areas. Stick close to the businesses and the action!

| Packin don't help ya much when they are behind you on that small sidewalk going under the bridges. Daylight is pretty safe I believe but stay with the crowds at night. Just common sense in any tourist town.

| I went there on my honeymoon a couple years ago and had a blast. We spent 2 whole days and nights just exploring the Riverwalk area. We stayed at a Holiday Inn that was right on the edge of down town. For a very low fee, you can buy bus passes that go all over the down town area. There are three or four different routes the busses take, all color coded, and easy to read. Our hotel was half a block from a stop, so we didnt even drive. The busses go all over - the Alamo, different places above the Riverwalk, you name it... On the way down - and the way back actually - we stopped at a HUGE outlet mall not too far away from SA. I want to say New Braunfels, but I could be off on that, but just ask around when you are in the area and people will know what you are talking about. For those who like to shop, they had everything - clothes, shoes, sporting goods, home decor...we dropped plenty of money there! We also spent one day and drove to Corpus Christi - had no idea what there was to do there, but ended up on the beach touring a retired air craft carrier, which was really cool. It is a museum now complete with retired air craft and you can go all over the ship. |
