Is drilling in ANWAR going to solve all our problems? NO. But we can drill many places like ANWAR and offshore that will go a long way to alleviate the burden on the American consumer. This past week, the Cubans announced, in a joint effort with the Chinese, that they will be setting up some oil-rigs 60 miles off the shore of Florida.

Does it pose any less risk to the environment, if another country reaps the rewards? No. We get soaked again by the environmentalists.

We are paying higher food costs, higher transportation costs, and higher costs for about everything....but hey, the caribou are doing great. They've tripled in numbers over the past few decades. At least we should feel good about that, right?

We are in competition with the rest of the world, and they are laughing at us. They are drilling off our shores in international waters and they are reaping the benefits of the oil they pump- All while still posing the same risk to the environment that we would pose if we drilled it.

We need to get off our asses and get the oil pumped for the good of America- in ANWAR, Offshore, and anywhere else we can find it, before our competitors pump it for themselves, as they are now doing.

Tee, I think I agree with you on this one. We have sat back and been way too happy to import oil from the Arabs for way too long. The hardcore republicans are in the pockets of big oil, and the hardcore liberals won't allow new refineries to be built and won't allow domestic drilling in places like the Alaska wildlife refuge. Is ANWAR the answer? No, it isn't. Saying ANWAR is the answer is like pissing on a fire. However, it could be one piece of the puzzle. I don't think there is a simple solution like we all wish there was. But I think that if we were allowed to do a bit more domestic drilling, build a few new refineries, and improve our foreign relations (as in talking to countries like Cuba and Venezuela instead of pointing fingers at them and calling them names because we don't agree with them) then maybe things simmer down a bit.

I gotta agree with you guys. But somebody makes it way too political. The treehuggers have to have a cause, but when it starts hitting them in the pocketbook, too, maybe they'll find a different one. It doesn't make sense - it's like thumbing our noses at oil-rich countries. It's almost as if we're all saying we're way too good to let our landscape become dotted with oil rigs.....so, um.....would they be so much worse than our blighted urban areas? It might be much better if they'd focus on that.

Good points. You know, it is kind of like the people who complain that they don't have good cell phone reception in their neighborhood, but refuse to allow one of those "ugly" towers to be built where they can see it. The sad thing is that we are so far behind now, that even if we did try to start doing more drilling or building more refineries, how long in the future until that stuff comes online and how much will we be paying for gas then?

Or we could cover the landscape with wind turbines and solar collectors instead. But wind farms have been stopped by the greens to save butterflies before.

We’ve set on our behinds while gas was cheap for too long and it’s catching up with us. My take is if you want to save the environment by blocking wells and refineries fine, but don’t whine about paying the price for it. If you want cheaper gas, do something instead of pointing fingers somewhere else. Congress has the oil company CEOs in every couple of years for hearings and found nothing.

Tee is right, ANWAR is only a small piece of the issue.

Over the last 30 years;

Democrats have blocked the development of new sources of petroleum.
Democrats have blocked drilling in ANWR.
Democrats have blocked drilling off the coast of Florida.
Democrats have blocked drilling off of the east coast.
Democrats have blocked drilling off of the west coast.
Democrats have blocked drilling off the Alaskan coast.
Democrats have blocked building oil refineries.
Democrats have blocked clean nuclear energy production.
Democrats have blocked clean coal production.

It’s time for change Democrats.

Wind and solar have nothing at all to do with the price of oil. They are electric producers. Oil is rarely used for electric production.

I agree with the rest of your post, though.

Ah but electric cars, electric home heating and the like would put a dig dent in our oil dependencies

The prices for all forms of energy have some relationship. Many of the electric companies burn natural gas to make electricity. Using more alternative energy has both direct and indirect force on the market.

A lot of people don't understand that if we began drilling our own wells, and started discovering alternate forms of energy and simply passed a plan to become energy independant, the oil prices would come down.

It's called market speculation. The guys getting rich from buying oil commodities will start selling and that in itself will cause the price of oil to fall.

and now the Dems want to tax the "excess profits" of the oil companies. WHile this may sound like a great idea to some Americans this is a bad road to go down. What do we do next...tax the "excess profits" of microsoft? The banks? Pharmacuticals?
