Something for the Backyard Mechanic

Here is something for you backyard mechanic type people. Might be extremely worth it with today's gas prices. Some of the videos toward the bottom of the web page looked very promising.

Sounds cool and neat, but has any backyard mechanics come up with other ideas? I have heard of a few that are not necessarily "legal" with the emissions systems on today's vehicles. I would be interested in seeing if anyone wants to try this technique or have different techniques to improve mileage on gas-guzzling vehicles. Have you tried to trade your pick-up or SUV off on a fuel economic vehicle? You won't get anything for a trade and some even refuse to offer a trade value.

This thing appears to be a variant of water injection that has been around for many years. I found an article in Mother Earth News about it dated 1979.

WATER INJECTION WIZARDRY

I’ve experimented years ago with modifications that both increased performance and mileage while lowering emissions to boot only to find myself running afoul with the EPA. It’s illegal to modify your car’s emission devices. You can get by with it in rural areas but watch out what you do if you live anywhere that has inspections.

Yeah, twenty years ago I got a 20% boost in mileage combined with proven lower tailpipe emissions with a few simple modifications on a full sized GMC 4x4 and was forced to put it back stock to save the environment.

If somebody wants to try it out and make a report back to the board on how it worked out I would be willing to chip in $15 for the purchase price. I got a PM today from somebody else that said they would be willing to chip in and they said they thought others would be willing to chip in also.

So if anybody feels like the have the mechanical skills and tools and like to tinker with things. This would be a good opportunity for you to get this where you aren't out the whole purchase price. Then if it works out, others would probably buy it for their vehicles and since you would have the experience at installing it you could make some extra cash installing the units for other people.

Any volunteers???

I'm going to look into it a bit more. So far I've read people calling it "snake oil" and others saying it works. Here is an interesting reply from one that says it does work, just not as easy as claimed to build. He also says the test, as done by Mythbusters, would not work.

Henry, I have been building and working on one of these for 3 years...currently it is in the trunk of a 1996 Lincoln Town Car. I have 4 extraction chambers on mine with my Hydrogen lines run under the carpet thru the car, and thru the firewall to the intake, and battery power run from the engine in a 2nd tube back to the trunk. The problem I have been having is the heat generation as the H2 and the O separates. Im currently visualizing something like a built in tranny cooler to lower the temperature back down, except that I get a better reaction once the H20 temp is up there. I'm not a pro with it by any means, but Ive gotten fairly literate with it. The one thing I will share with anyone that is thinking about building one, is that any and all metal parts that come in contact with your gases in the chambers should be stainless steel...and restaurant grade preferably. The 2nd thing I'll say is that tap water isn't adequate, as even the most minor traces of iron will cause something called "iron bacteria" or rust slag that will trash up your process quickly. Anyone may feel free to ask me questions. Does it work?...Yes. Is it as easy as the HHO ad makes it out to be?...No... Was Mythbusters correct in their busting out of the proposal?...Yes, the way it was made. Can it be made to work?...Yes. Am I continuing to work on it now?.... Nope, Im kinda burned out on it and need to get remotivated. Plus, since I don't have the funds to continue my research at this point.

EDIT: I have some errands to run this morning, but if anyone is interested... you can put me in your yahoo IM. Search for me or just put {ceegster} in it. I will be here at 3:00pm central time for those interested...that's today--Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 at 1500 hrs. Remember, I'm not a scientist, and I've forgotten more about this project, then I can remember, but nonetheless, Ill do what I can for anyone that's interested. I often thought about starting my own blog about that process, but then again... I still need to get remotivated and find some more funds. The total that I have invested so far is probably a little over $2500., but I'll tell ya what... it's the best 2500 dollars that Ive ever spent. Not because I've recouped my investment, but because I enjoyed every single hour I've spent working on it, and nobody can take that away from me. ;-)

One of the guys at my part-time job says he's built one and uses it on his F-150. His story is that he's getting 40mpg with it.

I haven't actually caught him coming or going where I can get a look under the hood but that's his story.

OK now this is just bazaar.

From what I'm getting the whole turning water(h2o) to Hydrogen(hho) is done through the process of electrolysis. It just so happens I've been using this process for years to clean my coins and stuff. In fact I have a do-it-yourself page that explains how to build one at home from a 9v ac adapter. Building and using homemade electrolysis

All this time I didn't realize the gas coming off of my contraption was hydrogen. This may be simpler than I thought if it really works.

Here is a picture from my contraption giving off HHO from tap water and electricity

It looks like Jeezeweeze, Tee and myself would be willing to kick in to buy one so far. I nominate Detector to do the install, he seems mechanically inclined to me as he has rebuilt cars and has even built a contraption that is similar for cleaning his treasures.
