I agree that a "spanking" is not bad, but there is a huge difference between spanking and beating. My children do get a swat if they are acting up, but only 1. Also the only thing used is a hand, I don't believe in using anything more than that. They don't get them often, but sometimes the "look" or the constant "no" doesn't work, so I have to use alternative methods. My husband can give the "look" and they immediately stop whatever it was they were doing, but I guess after 6 years I still haven't mastered the "look"! lol I have also given them a swat in the middle of the store or wherever we are, if they're acting up and there's no where close to take them to, but I've only had to do that once, they know now that if they pull something like that, they'll be going home and spending the rest of the day on their bed!

Taking your child into another room, bending them over your knee and swatting their ass a few times is a spanking. Grabbing their arm as they are running into the street and smacking their ass and telling them "No" is not a spanking.

So what do you consider that to be? If my child is getting ready to run into the street, you can bet your ass, I'm gonna grab whatever I can get my hands on to keep them out of the street. They will then get a swat, and sat down and explained to why they can't run into the street. I'm not just going to stand there and "hope" a car isn't driving by as my kid runs into the street. I'm going to stop them before they get there.

I was not saying it isn't the right thing to do. Quite the opposite.

A swat on the ass is not, in my opinion, a spanking. It is just that, a swat on the ass. Repeated swats in concession, in my opinion, is a spanking.

In my household, spankings usually were in tandum with words. Each word spoken was a swat. My mother and father, luckily, were people of few words. My grandmother, on the other hand, used exceptionally long sentences to get her point across.
