the smoking ban is more about protecting the employees of the establishment than the customers. as has been stated customers can decide whether or not to enter. employees who work in a smoking establishment are coming down with smoking related illnesses and impacting the states health care system.
monster, we already tried to outlaw drinking ie; 18th amendment

many of those employees are limited to those types of jobs. besides why shouldn't they get the same protection as the rest of the workforce. smoking is not allowed in my business ( not by my decision) why should it be allowed in someone elses.

Most workers that I know in "smoking" bars and restaurants are smokers too! Now they have to huddle outside too!

Heart attack admissions fall by up to 40% since smoking ban

The number of heart attack patients being admitted to emergency wards has fallen sharply in more than half of England’s hospital trusts since smoking was banned in public places.

The figures, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, are an early indication of the impact of the smoking ban on heart disease rates in England. Some hospitals have seen the number of cases fall by 41 per cent since last July.

The British Heart Foundation said that it showed the ban was the “most significant public health initiative this century”.

Studies in Scotland and Ireland, which introduced a public-smoking ban in 2006, showed hospital admissions for heart attacks falling by 17 and 14 per cent respectively.

Comparable evidence has come from France and Italy.

These drops in the rate of heart attacks have been attributed to a large number of people stopping smoking, and far fewer people being exposed to airborne toxins through passive smoking.

Doctors hope images like this will make smokers think

A public smoking ban would benefit the economy as well as people's health, the Chief Medical Officer for England has said. In his annual report, Professor Sir Liam Donaldson said a ban could save up to £2.7 billion.

His report also criticised the fashion industry for fuelling young people's interest in smoking.

He said highlighting the damage smoking can do to the skin could encourage more young people to quit.

The economic analysis within the CMO's report says the British economy could benefit by up to £2.7billion if such a ban went ahead.
This could include up to £680m saved by having a healthier workforce, which could produce more goods, £140m saved through fewer sick days, £430m saved because less production would be lost to cigarette breaks and £100m saved by not having to clean up behind smokers.

The CMO said evidence from abroad showed bans in pubs and restaurants have not proved to be bad for business.

He added visits to Ireland, California and New York, which have already banned smoking in public places, showed a ban could be enforced without the hospitality trade being damaged - as had been feared,
He said he found bars and restaurants "thronging with people".

And an economic analysis commissioned by the CMO found that fears of falling profits were unfounded.

A sharp drop in heart attack deaths in more than a dozen countries coincides with global efforts to make sure patients receive proven treatments, doctors report today.

A study of 44,372 patients in the USA, Canada, Europe and South America from 1999 to 2006 found that deaths, heart failure and cardiogenic shock (when the heart goes into shock and loses pumping power) all declined in patients hospitalized for heart attacks or for life-threatening chest pain.

As the study unfolded, more doctors worldwide were adopting state-of-the-art approaches to therapy. For instance, in 1999, only one-third of heart attack patients were treated with angioplasty, though angioplasty cuts the risk of death by 40% more than the clot-busting drugs. By 2005, 64% of all heart attack patients received angioplasty, the researchers report in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Hum, no mention of a smoking ban here? But hey, spin it any way that makes you feel better.

I for one am glad Independence passed a no-smoking ordinance. Now I don't have to wait for a seat at my favorite eating place. I do miss my favorite waitress, who got laid off because of slow business, but what the heck, she probably didn't need the extra money to feed her kids or help with the rent. It also saves the city time by not counting so much sales tax money.
