Actually doby's are reccomended for kids if you raise them from a puppy. They make great family dogs and are very loyal.

Border Collie Sarge, I ain't kidding. Do have long hair, but loyal to the end! Had 3 now, but I will be honest, the 'END' hurts! Look into, it seriously. Have a 13yo one now, and I am NOT looking forward to 'that' day, but it''s coming.

well, alright - just be careful. I've heard they are so loyal as to be dangerous to other children who simply want to play. I hope she's really happy with her new pet. Kids and animals - puppies or kittens - make such great pictures!!

I say go to the shelter and adopt someone. Some people say shelter dogs make better pets, even though it's rare to find a purebred dog. Personally, I love my mutt, 1 1/2 yr old lab mix, got her from the shelter as a pup. I am a big fan of shelter dogs. They just need someone to love them. (plus...they're cheaper to buy) ;) Surely you can find someone in there that fits your size and short-haired requirements. If you're still wanting a specific breed, I have lots of family who's always had heelers, red and blue both. (otherwise knows as Australian Cattle Dogs)

No shelter dogs but thanks.....I know you can get a good one.

Not beyond whippeting it out and letting it go after a few beers. :Jitter:

AOO, you need to get you a "Shitzzyou". Now for the kid, you need something small like a Weenie Dog. A Doberman would not be a recommendation. I 've never been around a Whippet, but they seem to be neat little dogs. Maybe kinda high strung if they take after a greyhound? Good luck!

The whippets I remeber ffrom the 70's are not for children.

However the Whippets you are talking about are good dogs. Need LOTS of exercise. Very hyper animals.
Grainy is right. You can't get better than a Border Collie.

Have you thought of a Terrier? They are smart dogs. I had a Jack Russell growing up & he was my best friend. He would ride on my bike with me everywhere & would get on a skateboard while I was on skates. My daughter has had a Terrier mutt since birth. He's not as smart, but they are best buds. He follows her everywhere. I know the end is near for him & dread the day we have to say goodbye.

I just adopted a dog from the Ft. Riley shelter... an eight month old Shepard-Husky mix. She's awesome. Good with the kids, doesn't bark, house broke, and nearly leash broke. Oh, and she listens better than some of my Soldiers do. I was looking for a border collie, but so was everyone else. I might go for the dobbie if I were you, but ONLY if I got it as a puppy, as they have too much of a reputation.
