The Safe cafe, Eckles Main Street Center

Must plug The Safe, the now open cafe on first level of Eckles Main Street Center. It is open through tomorrow, Friday, then on Jan. 2 reopens again after holidays. Great healthy food -- had homemade chicken gumbo soup yesterday, and a rueben sandwich with fresh made cole slaw. Very good coffee, too.

No fried foods at all. And everything is fresh, and lower fat.

Open today and tomorrow, 8 am - 2 pm . Give them a try if you enjoy tasty healthy food in a very, very clean place, with great help. Friend Jeff Eckles is the owner. They also do take-out, and have a few vegie sandwich and salad selections, too.

Has anyone eaten here yet? I wish it had been open while I was in town. I was seriously in need of some healthier options.

    I have.

Sorry, but I can make the same bread and turkey sandwich at home for less than $7 with the scraps in my refrigerator. The chips that came with the sandwich were like tortilla strips that people sprinkle on their salads.

I have not tried their soups, because I have not been back. Three of us went and none were satisfied or happy. We even went to Sonic to get more food before returning to work.

Humm. I wouldn't really eat at Sonic so maybe I would be satisfied.

  5. I don't mind paying $7 for a sammi if it's done right and there is enough for me to eat for supper!! Scholotzki's and Quiznoes come to mind. Wouldn't pay 7 bucks for a sammi I couldn't have enough to take with me tho. Course Deli's aren't my fav sort of lunch place cause I am partial to Sonic, Whataburger, and all that unhealthy crap! Hope this place does well tho I used to eat there when it was another sammi shop. They had great cajun food and gave you lots of it.

Yeah, I'm more partial to the healthy experience of it all and the idea that I can get something to go without my only options being fast food. I just can't eat that stuff without getting a huge stomach ache. I hope it goes well. I'd sure love my family to have a quick and healthy option in town.

But, why pay $7? There are 2 Subway sandwich shops in town that you can get $5 foot longs! :D

I haven't had any food there but if it were of better quality than Subway then I would certainly pay more for less. Plus, if local ingredients were used then I would be supporting a local business and local farmers. I doubt it is local ingredients yet but maybe fresh local produce will be used this summer.

I would just prefer knowing exactly what is in my food. Have you see some of the "meat" Subway uses? The "bacon" is see through.

I don't care what anyone else does but I just prefer to eat healthier than that and I prefer to actually know what I'm eating.

Not having eaten at the Safe Cafe I can't say if that is the case for this place but I'm hoping there might be a healthier option for a quick meal in town.

It was so hard for me to eat healthy there just for the lack of options. Even the salad bars in town are filled with salads with mayo and marshmallows and pasta. Don't get me wrong that stuff tastes really good but it isn't healthy or a salad for that matter.

I just have high hopes that this new place will give a better option. By the sound of it though, have my doubts. I don't think many folks want a healthier option.

Local ingredients, you mean like meat? This is the DESERT here, can't grow nothing in the DESERT!! :( Jack, if you knew what was in most of your food, you wouldn't eat it. How about a tour of a packing plant, or a lettuce farm, or a restaurant kitchen--- yum yum

Oh, I know I don't know everything in my food but I can sure as heck control it more if I don't eat at fast food joints. We mostly cook at home but thankfully LA has a letter grade system that has to be posted in front windows. I've seen people still walk in and sit down in a "C" restaurant though. You won't find me anywhere there isn't a giant "A". Even that isn't a guarantee but it's something.

My father used to work heating and air conditioning in Dodge when I was growing up so we kinda new what places to steer clear of since he was in a lot of kitchens in town.

I hope enough people care about healthy eating to give this place a chance. It's a great idea.
