    People dying at the hospital

I just heard that there have been three deaths in the last two weeks due to staff infection received while at Western Plains Hospital here in Dodge City. Has anybody else heard about this? Why hasn't it been in the news so that people could make an informed choice whether or not they really want to go to the hospital here?

I don't think it is staff or staph. I think it is mersa (unknown spelling).

Well, whatever it is, it is a bad deal when you leave the hospital in worse shape (dead) than you went in.

MRSA is a staff or staph infection. It is sometimes called mersa staff but it's long name is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

It’s not good when the staff gets staph.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics. These antibiotics include methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. Staph infections, including MRSA, occur most frequently among persons in hospitals and healthcare facilities (such as nursing homes and dialysis centers) who have weakened immune systems.

MRSA infections that occur in otherwise healthy people who have not been recently (within the past year) hospitalized or had a medical procedure (such as dialysis, surgery, catheters) are known as community-associated (CA)-MRSA infections. These infections are usually skin infections, such as abscesses, boils, and other pus-filled lesions. (see Community-associated MRSA. )

Thanks for the clarification MIT. I am very uneducated on the differences.

  8. Man that can really mess up your accredidation. Hope they have a good epidemiology dept. I'm not sure what the MRSA rate is in most hospitals but they all have it throught the year. Deaths altho are not a good thing. Three in a month in a small hospital tho seems sort of high to me.

You sure all the deaths were hospital aquired MRSA? There is a difference between getting it in house vs community aquired then dying in the hospital. Once MRSA you have a higher risk of getting it over and over under the right circumstances. Might not really be the hospital's issue -

I'm not 100% sure, it was just something that I heard. I know for a fact about the gentleman that Lucky brought up. The other 2 not so sure, just heard there were 3 in the last couple of weeks.
