RV: Need Help; Onan Generator

I have an RV with an Onan Generator.

Symptom #1
Generator is going through batteries like crazy. I have returned 3 so far to Wlamarts- they are badly bulged.

Symptom #2
Plus the Generator will not stay running. It will stay rinning if you jump it with a car but as soon as you remove the jumper cables, the generator will stat spitting and sputtering and then die.

It acts like a car would act if the alternator was bad.

I don't know much about RV generators, but I am planning on digging into it this weekend tosee if I can figure it out. Anyone else have any ideas on where to start.

Sounds like the alternator under the flywheel might be shorted out. My JD rider mower doing the same thing, I disconnected the charge wire from the alternator that comes out from under the flywheel and it stays running but will not charge the battery now of course.

If the batteries are bulging after short usage, it sound to me like the voltage regulator has gone kaput. You can check this with a DC voltmeter, use jumper cables off of a car to start the generator but with the car engine off so you don't read the car alternator. The voltage with the generator running should be about 13 to 14 volts, read across the jumper cables. If the reading is higher, the voltage regulator is probably shot. If the reading is lower, then the alternator on the generator engine has probably quit. Do the batteries boil themselves dry when they self- destruct?

Maybe it’s the batteries.

Are you checking these batteries before hooking them up or just assuming they’re good because they’re new? What happens if you disconnect the battery and jump start it? It should stay running off the alternator if it’s set up like a car.

Don't ask me. I'm still trying to get my generator running right since the last storm power outtage!! Isn't electricity supposed to be "magic" anyway?? You just flip a switch, and-------waalllllaaah!!
And Highway could be right. I have gotten several bad batteries from Walmart. All were "brand new"!

We've tried other (known good) batteries, all with the same results.

Take it down to DAlton Brothers. They will tell you if it is worth fixing. Might be better to junk it and start fresh!!
