| more info needed To run Chkdsk, you need to have a space after the "k" and before the slash. Even then, you should be at a dosprompt prior to trying to run it or you may not see any errors or results returned to your screen- it will just flash back to windows. To get to a dosprompt, first type "cmd" or "command" (depends on the OS) in the "run" window, then hit enter. At the black and wihite screen, type " Chkdsk /f and hit <enter>. What operating system are you using? Windows 95, 2000, XP, or Vista?

| How are you trying to run disk defrag? I don't use another program to defrag. I use what came on my XP computer. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. I have found that occasionally programs like Diskkeeper or Speedfrag, etc. tend to cause conflicts with other things running on your computer. You can also run a chkdsk which just checks the disk. Chkdsk /f automatically tries to fix any bad sectors that the chkdsk found, hence the /f. If you have problems with the drive that chkdsk/f won't fix then you may have to resort to re formatting the drive and re installing all the software back onto the newly clean drive.

| There are a few other things with CHKDSK you can do without re-formatting. You will need your Win XP install disk though. Boot from install disk and choose recovery console. First it will ask what partition (IE 1 - C Drive) enter "1" and then it will ask for administrator PW. (if there is no administrator pw just leave blank and hit enter) From the prompt type "CHKDSK /R" the switch /r tells it to check HD for corruption and repair any files. This can take a while to run and will look like the programs starts over after it repairs any files or HD problems. Other Commands that can be ran from the prompt are FIXBOOT which can repair some booting into windows problems or Blue Screens before reaching windows log in. Other commands I DO NOT recommend are FIXMBR which will replace your master boot record. However should this command fail, it can render your HD useless and force a re-format on you or render your HD to not be recognized at all in cmos. |

| YIKES! Thanks for all the suggestions, but it all seems to complicated for this little old brain. I try to run defrag as previously suggested, and that is when I get the chkdsk /f message. I did that, and nothing has really changed. Guess I should take it to someone who knows much more than I. What do you all think of Starrtech? Thanks for all your time and help. whoknows |

| I don't really know. I haven't heard anything bad. All I know is that I wouldn't take anything to or buy anything from Schroeder's.
