Just reading the past garden city newspaper and see that Menard's is going to Garden. What are these Starr bonds for? Are we missing out on all these stores because of time or just not willing to give the companies any tax relief? Heard all the rumors about Menards and Kohls coming to dodge but there is no way that menards will come to dodge if there is one in garden. Does our city government need to be more aggressive?

Freddy's Custard & Steakburger is looking for a Dodge City location. Does anybody know of a good location for them?

Anywhere, I'm hungry! There are some empty lots on west Earp that may be big enough, maybe between the casino and the DCCC area?

Dodge City doesn't need retail, you have the casino and the 3 I thingy. Retail would totally screw up the 'old buddy' thing they have going on in Dodge, right clueless?

I wouldn't bet on Kohls. GC has been begging for years (for the former Kmart and Walmart when they were both open) and Instead we got Sears and Ace Hardware. Hutch had to give land and tax breaks and millions of dollars to Kohls to even get them to plan a store then they lost anyways because Dillards is leaving. Freddys is looking in Dodge once they place in add for staff in the paper. The Salina/Hays franchise owner bought the Garden City franchise and placed adds for manager in the paper, I haven't heard about Dodge. Also GC had little to do with Menards coming in. They just told a Developer that was interested in the community that they would agree to let them build. They didn't go asking or recruiting they just came with the developer.

Are you kidding, Dodge City is missing out on the Menards? The City Council needs to be 'Put Out Of Their Misery'. ;)

To me it makes no sense for Menard's to go into GC, especially in the location they chose, since there is already plenty of competition for $$$$ with Home Depot and Sams Club right there. Dodge City would have given them basically the same demographic with no competition to speak of.

The Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Marquette, Michigan stores have to compete with other stores and they seem to do fine. You have to remember Menards signed on as part of phase 1 a new shopping center there is going to be more and the developers are the ones who talked to them not the city of Garden City.

I don't know about anybody else, but with $4 fuel it really pisses me off to drive 70 miles for affordable lumber and supplies. Dodge City has become the dirt hole of Southwest Kansas.

    Mead Lumber is pretty fair.

When referring to Garden, I never show at Home Depot. Pro Build has way better lumber deals.

Considering the cost of gas, Mead is Dodge's best bet under the circumstances. Too damn bad TM Deal shut their doors years back. That was back when there was a downtown. You can still go and visit the TM Deal location and relive all of the excitement of going with your great grandfather down to the lumberyard to buy some quikrete. Just look for the unsupported concrete block wall off of Spruce and Third.

Heard that Garden spoke too soon about getting Menards. Apparently they are still deciding...

I watched the last city meeting no one protested it , Menards submitted the site plan and it was approved, and they stated it should be open by spring 2013 with roadwork in the area to begin soon. They are also going to start lobbying KDOT for a new highway bypass to replace the current one. It is also the ONLY confirmed tenant at the new shopping center so far.
    From The GCTelegram "
construction work on street improvements will begin as early as this summer and that the anchor home improvement store will be open by next spring."

I am a contractor in the business of remodeling and handyman projects and I have been a customer of Menards for going on 20 years now and no one comes close to the selection and customer service that I have experienced. They are a family owned business for 53 years and have their own mill for wood product, bypassing any middle man. They will deliver product to you, you can order by phone, if you have a card with them, which has no fee, you can receive 2% back at the end of the year on what you spend at the store. Haven't seen Lowes or Home Depot or any Do It Mediocre do that.
If Garden get's Menards, they will put Home Depot out of business unless H.D. changes their prices. If Dodge gets one, goodbye to Do It Best and most small hardware stores. We have seen this in Wichita as Lowes on the west side saw their business drop by over 55% after Menards opened last March.
Go to Menards.com and look at weekly adds and you will see how much these so-called home improvement stores have been screwing everybody on prices. I don't shop anywhere but Menards and I am currently 160 miles from the closest one but the money I save is far worth the dive or the delivery price than buying from Lowes, Home Depot or some local lumber yard. My local people are mad at me for shopping at Menards but I told them, get an incentive plan and drop prices get me a better selection and I'll shop at your place. To me it's all about the money, less out of the customers pocket plus give the customers more of a choice and if that's a crime then arrest me. There is no reason Dodge couldn't have a Menards also. My home town in Iowa has a Menards and they are half the size of Dodge, only 24,000 people. If Wichita can support 3 Menards, 2 Home Depots , 2 Lowes I think Dodge or Garden should not be the issue. Over the years the biggest problem for a Menards was location away from headquarters. They do all their own shipping with their own truck drivers and do not want them any further than a day away from home. A good practice for keeping the family together.

Looks like Dodgeboard.com has become the stomping ground for some Menards junior executives looking to justify surfing the web during work hours. Not sure what to think of this:

This is what Walmart did. Ran everyone else out of town and then BOOM!!!! Prices started to skyrocket; squeezing the locals for more cash!

Garden City's Kmart and Gibsons killed off Wards and Woolworths long before walmart came in ;). Walmart took out Kmart (gibsons ran into unrelated financial problems dealing with corporate and franchise owned stores having different prices) The Supercenter really only took the grocery store in the old kmart that is now Ace Hardware and The Mattress Hub. Alco closed all of the larger stores in Kansas (Hays, Manhattan, Junction City, Garden City, Olathe, and more recently Newton) because they had declared bankruptcy. My parents were Gibsons people anyways they still think Alco is trashy.
