| I dont see how you can say cops profile...maybe some do, but I personally do not know of any that do. Why not? Because we value our jobs and dont want to be stuck with a law suit. Kansas has just enacted some laws and tracking devices to check to see if law enforcement agencies are profiling on any level. Feel free to check into this...and, if you think it is wrong, then voice your opinion to the admin at the PD, City Commissioners, etc. From reading these posts, I guess my opinion is the minority. I grew up with all races from all walks of life, and that has influenced the person I am today. Am I happy with illegals getting things and not following the rules like other hard working people? Of course...it isnt fair. But to say I have to look at one person who is dodging the rules of society and automatically say the guy next to him must be doing it, too, because he speaks the same language and has the same color skin, I do not think is fair. What about this way...if I can say the majority of white males I have seen arrested on drug charges have long hair, does that mean I have the right to stop every white male with long hair I see and assume they have drugs, too? ![]() |

| Radioguy, if you don't subtly profile, congrats, you're the only cop in America who doesn't. I suspect you do tho. You do learn from your experiences, right? Open any newspaper in america and read the names of the people who stabbed each other last night. Do a Google search for The Most Wanted in any state in the nation. If you don't see a common thread, well then, you just haven't been paying attention. Before you label me a bigot, go look for yourself. Are the newspapers also bigots? Are the law enforcement agencies who decide who is most wanted, bigoted? To not see that the vast majority of lawbreakers are nonwhite, is to believe in a grand conspiracy. |

| Just to back myself up, I did a Google search for the most wanted in Kansas: Hispanic: 26 White: 6 Black: 4 Other: 2 Given the population percentages, I'd say those numbers make a clear statement. |

| I would like to offer an alternative to "profiling"......it's called "good investigative intuition or work" by my cop kids. They don't "profile" but when ya see a car that doesn't belong in that neighborhood Radio - ya gotta admit that ya slow down and take a second look. If my kids didn't do that they wouldn't nab 1/2 the "break ins" that they do. It's really not meant to be a negative thing - it's meant to be aware of your surroundings and look for what is out of place. You still need an infraction to stop but you don't need a reason to look for the infraction. Just common sense.

| Good example TexKan. Cops profile, but intuition is a better word. If you're looking for a vehicle, Radioguy, that was reportedly selling drug in a neighborhood, and you have no description beyond that...you see two vehicles in the neighborhood but you can only check one at a time. Which one do you check first? 1) The slammed lowrider with custom paint, chrome chain steering wheel, with driver and passengers with tattoos covering their arms and wearing bandanas. 2) The new F-250 Powerstroke with a cleancut driver wearing a cowboy hat. Now I know you can give us all an example of how you once arrested a cleancut cowboy in a Powerstroke for selling drugs, but we're talking about statistics here. |

| Thanks Fred - just tryin to find some common ground - I know it's here somewhere -

| I hav to agree with Fred and TexKan, but like them I wouldn't necessarily call it "profiling" that word just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Call it "Judging by past experience or even statistical experience." I did bar security for several years (I know nothing near to a police officer, but hear me out.) and I wouldn't say i'd profile, but if I see a group of guys, just like Fred described it, with the baggy jeans and bandanas and such. I would keep a closer eye on them, that anybody because in my past experiences they have caused more trouble in the bars i've worked than anybody else. Judging by experience.
