Elkhart's streets are laid-out such as to trap escaping Mexicans.

When the city of Elkhart was young, the railroad was the main attraction in town. Much of the freight and the commerce of the city was directly tied to the railway. Hence the city has grown up around the railroad. Now that the railroad has been replaced by the highway system the city now has a standard North-South road system combined with a Northwest-Southeast road system. Thankfully Elkhart has some of the nicest residents in town that are always willing to give directions when visitors (or residents) get their directions mixed up.
