Cops on Cell Phones

I've never really noticed, but in the last few days every cop I see has a cell phone glued to their ear. I didn't notice this until I was going 45 in a 30 oops, and I looked at the cop to see if he noticed and he was paying no attention. I was in the Kwik Shop on 14th and Wyatt Earp, and a cop was on his cell phone while the radio on his belt was singing away. I was on Trail St. for 15 minutes the other day waiting to get on 14th so I could make it to work on time. There were people parking in front the trail (isn't that against the law to block traffic) and people one right after the other parking on the railroad tracks. I seen a few cops pass by all with cell phones to their ear. This bothers me!!! I think they should paying more attention to whats going on around them.. Has anyone else noticed this?!

Down here lots of cops are on cell phones. They call each other, they talk to dispatch, the front desk, and yep..... even mommie. Soundsl like they are pretty normal to me. Course if you feel they aren't doin there job - then I guess that's an issue - Lots of officers on the street around a constuction site says "side job" to me. Those folks payin the officer don't pay em to write tickets and such. My baby works side jobs where he just sits in the cruser and reads. Lots of times it's about the law bein on the premisis...... it changes lots of folks idea bout that nice CD changer you left in your hooptie. Good Luck with the cell phone mystery! Not a huge problem, and not all of them are doing it.. Just an observation.

In Wichita, I know that the Officers use cells to talk to dispatch and each other when the topic is sensitive and shouldn't be broadcast. It is usually done at night when they get unlimited minutes from the provider. Doesn't really match your situation but it tells me that maybe there is a legitimate use for them.

Bargod is right. Alot of the time, cell phones are used to discuss matters that shouldn't be put out over radio frequencies, ie scanners.

I know last month that Houston's 911 system caught a glitch and the only communication was with thier cellphones. I also didn't include the word "sesitive" in my post. My DIL worked nights and she used her phone all the time for the reason Bargod stated.......FREE....... Who knows?? Maybe it was just an odd day when everyone there was usin thier cell phone.

I see your concern tho and the way to get it really addressed is to take it to an officer (if you are just curious) or to the chief (if ya really feel there is an issue) Can't nuthin be fixed if ya don't know there is an issue.

I wish I was that lucky the day I got my ticket for going 45 in a 30, I was on the cell phone not the cop, but it won't happen again, lesson learn. I was actually on the phone telling my dispatch that I was going to be a little late, when "Oh sh_t I am really going to be late now, for I am getting stopped". were as if I stayed off the phone I would have made it a minute or two late, but as it turned out it was a little longer, and $99.50 costly. Won't do that again. DCPD you are doing a great job

Seems to me half the people I meet on the road/street these days has a cell phone stuck to their head. Sign of the times I guess.

If not being used for emergencies or actual business, I think "just visiting" while driving should be outlawed. How would you enforce it?? I don't know! I am on the highways most of the time, and there are numerous cases of inattentive driving. These range from cell phones, to mirror primping, to reading books, to eating, to music, to all sorts of stupid stuff! I even saw a guy one time brushing his teeth. Come on people, get up earlier in the morning and save us the hassle of avoiding you.
