Some of these things can be costly...but they may help you sleep at night....

Get reinforced steel or solid wood doors for your exterior entrances - secure them with reinforced deadbolts and a door bar. You'll spend about 200.00 per door.

Intall a security system with window breakage sensors, battery backup and indoor/outdoor sirens. Add a cellular dialer for police notification. You can get these on eBay for under 200.00. You can even set them up to notify you via pager or cellphone.

Install a surveillance system with DVR constant data recording. These can be setup with outside cameras and positioned to watch the whole negborhood. You can get these for around 500.00 on eBay.

Bullet Sheild - You can construct one for under 50.00. Sure made me sleep a lot better when I lived at my old house. Now I sleep in the basement at my new house.

My house was not secure when I first moved in, so I experienced a home invasion, a robbery and theft outside my premisis. Since the installation of the security system, motion lights, surveillance system, warning signs and decals, I have had no issues whatsoever.

I know we shouldn't have to do this, but I do sleep very well at night knowing there is no way I can be caught off guard again. Sure, a persistant criminal could still find a way in, but not without advance warning to myself and notification to the police, and subsequently a bullet between the eyes. I am a dead-on marksman.

I am a gadget freak with a strong background in technology and surveillance. I pity the idiot who trys to break in my house. They'd have better luck breaking into the white house.

This is my system:
Surveillance: DVR w 90 day recording capacity, 6 interior cameras, 10 exterior cameras with infra-red total darkness capabilities, event triggering and remote web viewing via PC or pda. Interfaces with phone system for remote commands.

Security: DSC total home security system, 7 day battery backup, infra-red, window and attic protection, outbound cellular dialing, intercaes with phone system for remote commands and audio monitoring. Also has fire protection and dials 911 to report a fire automatically.

Home automation: Stargate x-10 whole house system- controls other devices such as door locks, surveillance system, security system, and allows for remote web commands. Can issue commands by voice, remote control device, or by phone. Controls pool, heating/ac and all lights.

So here's what happens in the event of an intruder at my house (if they get past the doors)...2 Sirens are activated on the exterior of the house and one inside the house. The system dials the police, my pager and my cell phone, then starts dialing 5 other people on my call list, includes negbors (uses cellular so cutting the phone lines does no good). The strobe lights start flashing on the exterior which can be seen about 5 miles away. All cameras are activated for constant recording instead of motion triggered recording. (Camera recordings are uploaded to an offsite ftp server so stealing the DVR does no good). Killing the power does no good as everything is on a backup system. All the lights in the house flash for 10 seconds then stay on, exterior lights continue to flash. An audio warning can be announced throughout the house "Get out now before you are shot! Authorities have been notified and are en-route"

I don't have jewelry, a million dollars or a lot of expensive stuff to steal - so why do I do this? PEACE OF MIND! plus I have the time to spend and love working with gadgets.

Most people don't need to go to this extreme but I think everyone in Dodge needs a security system and a surveillance system, if you want to sleep at night.

Army of One. I'm looking and whats available and the location is a very depressing sight. You get neighbors that believe the front porch is a living room or you look around and see how many vehicles have plastic taped on them because theyv'e had their windows broken out or you look inside the house and it smells and looks like they kept cattle in there before they hauled them to excel.

I was told once by an alarm guy that because those are pressure sensors that sometimes they can be set off by a truck going down the street. Have you heard of or seen this?

The old ones were that way...but the new ones are actually tuned to the frequency of glass breaking. Mine have never gone off erroneously.

There are weaknesses in any alarm system. Mine for example...If I only have the infra-red zone armed and not the doors and windows or other devices, a small child(under 50lbs) could walk through undetected. This is because The infra red sensors have pet-immune feature activated to keep from false alarming on my cats. Likewise, if you come into the house from extreme cold, like below 30 degrees and the surface of your clothes are still very cold, you can pass through the infra red system undetected (for a few minutes until you start to give off a heat signature). I don't normally leave the house without arming all zones, unless I am going to work out in the garage...which is also armed. This assumes you know where the laser beams and sentry guns are located...LOL!

And YOU will be the one that goes to jail, and gets sued for shooting the burglar! I know, because it has already happened before in DC. What justice??
