I get what everyone is thinking and I don't disagree. I think what brought the cop to her position was that the backseat of the car was full of groceries. If the woman was pregnant and bleeding, she had no business at the grocery store. And I don't believe she was anywhere near a direct course toward a hospital. So. SHE wasn't on her way to the hospital, why should a medically uninformed cop (she should have been informed, but still) take her seriously? Yeah, she should have been escorted to the hospital and that's awful. But she wasn't and it's all over now. It's a year later or more - why continue to beat this dead horse. I haven't read whether the cop is still on the force or not.

Last I read they were both suspended.

I'm liley one of the biggest cynics on the planet but if I'm responsible for another person's well being, ie they are in my custody, I'm going to cover my own ass and err on the side of caution.

These two violated the public trust in them by not simply calling for the EMT's to come check out her condition.

I don't know the details of where she'd been or where she was headed but if I were the cop I'd assume she was buying groceries and she realized she was bleeding at the store and was on her way to seek help.

Then I'd have my job and the city wouldn't be facing a lawsuit.

Yeah, but you're a responsible citizen - the cops don't have that luxury. They see loads of people every stinking day that only want to take advantage of get out of being arrested. I still don't agree with them refusing her medical treatment, but I can see where the error was made.

Police work is about the safety of society. If I as a responsible citizen would take these basic steps then the police should have done, at least, those same steps.

Anyone the public hires, give the power to investigate or detain and in some cases use deadly force against members of society, has to accept that responsibility and all that goes with it. One of the most important things that goes with that is they have to be held to a higher standard than the rest of us.

Once their convenience or even their safety comes before the safety of the society they have accepted the responsibilty to protect they need to question who and what they are.

And I totally agree that an error was made and that the officers and the city should pay. But I can still see the officer's point. I'm not saying that I agree with them, I just see their point and where their thinking came from.
