| Very few PDs are fully staffed and the DCPD has not been full staff since Ive been here. Currently, we are about 6 officers down. That might not seem like alot, but consider what it takes to get an officer on his own and on the street. If we hire someone that either has no law enforcement experience or come to Dodge from a state where the LEO certificate will not transfer, they must go to KLETC for 14 weeks (sometimes longer if its over the thanksgiving and/or xmas holidays), DCPD gets them in as soon as possible, which means pretty much within the first 2-3 weeks after hire. When they complete their KLETC training (in Hutchenson, at our expense) they return to start the DCPD FTO program. Depending on the trainee, this can take 12-14 weeks or so. The trainee will be assigned to a FTO and will take calls as usual, but the pace is much slower. Do the math now. Just going on the low side and ONLY account for training, it takes 28 weeks or so to put an officer on the street, by themselves. We may be 6 officers down, but realize that anywhere from 3-5 current staff are in the FTO program or waiting to go to the academy. Fully staffed would be no officers down and none in training. Never going to happen in Dodge. This town is TOO good of a training ground. When larger cities are offering incentives to hire on ranging from moving expensies, signing bonuses in cash or deposits on homes, they are hard to compete with. Cities like Houston, Dallas and LA are short hundreds of PD at any given time. Some people on this board may not think so, but we have many very good police officers here in Dodge and they are being recruited by bigger, better paying agencies. Why? Because we get more OJT experience in one year, then most will get in five. Dodge will get every type of crime there is and most will get an up close and personal, hands on view withing the first year. If Dodge wants to keep an experienced police force, we need to figure out exactly why they are leaving (no, its not all about the money, trust me on this) and fix it or, as is the current state, we will have only a handful of officers with more then 5 years LEO experience under their belts working in Dodge City. Sorry about the ramble, but this might help with the question: Why? P158

| That's a very good point Spike. I forgot that they do indeed "own" Dodge. I guess my point is there just doesn't seem like the DCPD has much of a presence in DC. And I guess I don't think 1 or 2 more per shift will help. We need more!! I think LFB makes a good case that Dodge has a lot of things going on in this town to make a good training base. So, it just seems to me that perhaps they are over worked and need more manpower. I just know that when I travel down a street and I pass an officer, I immediately look to see if I'm speeding. I would tend to think that just having more officers available for patrol (especially at night when we have unnecessary painters, vandals, etc.) would help ease the crime numbers. Just having the patrol cars driving down streets prone to incidents might decrease the #. But maybe I'm totally offbase. My degree is not in criminal justice, it was in "kegology". |

| Houston is primarily lookin for young cops........ thier wt / ht restriction is the same as the military. Pretty strict and there is no exception. Once you get hired the requirement drops but you have got to meet the criteria to get on. Seasoned cops down here have trouble getting on - they pass everything but ht/wt. One officer finally dropped that 20 lbs and got on - they don't require a physical agility test - you just meet the physical requirement. Galveston requires you run the seawall daily - bout 5 miles worth. Seasoned cops just are not gonna do all that crap. That is one reason Houston has the hundred (yes hundreds) of vacancies. New cops from other states come in and they haven't seen what Houston can offer - money, lifestyle, gangers with a mission, and yep even jealous X's that BBQ thier girlfriends. Houston is a sick, sick place. Any cop without experience that comes down here needs just as much FTO time as you do up there. FTO time is spent no matter how long ya been a cop. My son has trained cops that have 0 to 20 yrs experience. Ya don't learn the streets from a book - ya learn it by ridin and learnin. It's a time consuming thing and it's tough to invest time and manpower into someone then have them leave the first time they get a chance. Course that' s what police work is tho - the bigger dept, the more challanging assignment, - this stuff just happens - it's not just Dodge it's happening to.
