Then he can keep himself in his palace and stay out of the way. Unless he's delivering the equipment that belongs to Kansas he doesn't need this photo op. What else is he going to do other than say, "yep... it's all pretty much gone."

But I can also see where Wordy's coming from. I mean, look at all the manpower and lost time it'll take to accommodate the President. I'm impressed by him coming to KS, yet alone Greensburg, but that's not helping the citizens at all.

His coming actually disrupts the clearing and recovery efforts.

Security alone keeps people out and things from getting done.

Send the help they deserve and stay out of the way.

It's all political with politicians. Like it or not.

Most of the time, a presidential visit happens to raise morale. He's a smart guy, he won't get in the way...much.

I concur. One of the big things you learn in incident management is that the worst thing that can happen is a visit by the big politicians. It disrupts the work you're doing, and as an incident manager or incident commander, you can't do YOUR work 'cause you gotta meet with and accomodate the people who may or may not understand exactly what needs to happen.

If you can possibly discourage such visits, it's a good thing.

If you want a good example of this, review the Loma Prieta earthquake in San Francisco a number of years back.
