I dunno - I personally wear seatbelts. I got out of a car wreck that killed my first husb by not having a seat belt on - but I gotta tell ya that isn't the norm. If I make sure my grandson is belted in cause I love him - I also make sure I'm belted in cause I love him. Easy solution to me - I don't let my politics and personal freedom blur my safety. That's just dumb.

From an insurer's prospective: If you don't wear your seatbelts, you have a better (much better, imho) chance of being maimed for life or killed. Either of which is not pretty for you and costs me (insurers) the policy limits. Now, if my insured happens to be responsible for an accident that kills another party because that party chose to not wear a seatbelt, I'm still paying the policy limits, but this time for somebody that I didn't insure on purpose because they didn't wear their seatbelts. Do you see where I'm coming from? Because of your stupid choice, I or my insurance company are paying.

In a perfect world, the death claim would be rejected because the dead person didn't wear a seatbelt, but then the courts would have to decide in all their infinite medical wisdom whether or not the dead person would have died regardless of the seat belt. Alas, that ties up the legal system, adds interest to the claim and just generally ruins everybody's (except the lawyers') day.

On one hand, I don't agree with legislating every move we make once you step out of bed in the morning, but, on the other hand, this particular move affects more than just ourselves.

Back to the subject at hand. If tickets are not written for this offense, then insurers know nothing about whether the insured wears seat belts. If they put some sickem behind the bill, it will do some good. At least for one week.

Seat belts save lives AND money...that's the bottom line. Too bad they don't have the same fervor about illegal immigration as they do seat belts...

Ditto Texie. I wear my seat belts too! I just don't like having everything "forced on me" by a law! Auto wrecks cause head injuries too----does that mean there should be a law that when driving a motor vehicle that you should have to wear "crash helmets"?? Breathing the ammonia from the feedyards can cause "brain damage" too---does that mean there should be legislation requiring all local residents to wear "oxygen masks"??? The UV rays from the Sun cause skin cancer---should there be a law that no one should wear any clothing that allows the UV rays to contact the skin???? You can see where I am coming from----------a never ending bank of laws conceived to violate almost all of our freedoms! Just give them time.

Kansas seatbelt law

I found this about the Kansas seatbelt law...

Quote:
Kansas has a secondary seat belt law for adults, which means an officer cannot pull over a vehicle solely for a seat belt violation. A driver would have to break a traffic law and then be cited for the additional seat belt violation.

However, the state has a primary seat belt law for children 14 and younger. That means children must be securely restrained in a vehicle and an officer can pull over a vehicle if it appears a child is not properly restrained.

With the new legislation, the primary seat belt law will extend to cover children 17 and younger.
Also...
Quote:
Seat belt violations are $10 and child safety seat violations are $60. Eichkorn said a front-seat passenger also may be cited for not wearing a seat belt.

He said the Kansas Legislature passed a new seat belt law that goes into effect July 1. The law increases the fine for adult seat belt violations to $30 and also makes it mandatory for occupants 14 through 17 to be buckled no matter where they are inside the vehicle.
As I read the article, an adult not sitting in the front seat isn't required to wear a seatbelt.
