I was in an accident 5/20... my neighbor across the street backed into me while I was already in the street. I'm peeved because his insurance says they're not paying for it because he isn't one of the insured (dealership plates, i don't get it) so I have $1600.00 worth of damage to my car and this guy is still driving around w/ out a care in the world. I've seen 3 different plates on his vehicle 2 of them being expired. I decided to go to the police department earlier to see if there was anything they could do about it (as I said earlier, I'm peeved and I don't feel he should be getting away scott free) they said they couldn't do anything because he's on private property. They suggested I go to city hall (which I did) to inform them they have 2 vehicles in the driveway w/ no plates. Soooooooooo I got to work and a cop came to visit me and informed me if I were to step foot on their property again I would have harassment charges filed against me for trespassing. Which is complete crap.. I have NEVER set foot near their property, but the cop didn't feel he needed to get my side of the story!!! I took pictures of the different plates earlier this afternoon but they (pictures ) were taken from my house. I think if the cop would've been doing his job correctly and getting both sides of the story he would've seen that. I told him I didn't feel it was right the accusations he was bringing to me, when all he had to go off was the word from this guy. grrr I'm so aggrivated!!!! I'm not sure what to do, if this guy calls agains and ACCUSES me of being in his garage I will have charges brought up against me. Yet I bring PROOF to the police that this guy is doing something illegal and nothing gets done!!!! What do I do

Turn him into the Beauty Police for chipped paint, unattended graffiti, cracked sidewalks or Unsightly Sites.

Trust me. The Beauty Police have more authority than the DCPD; who's only regard is to enforce those 'crimes' that pay fines.... such as traversing North 14th. southward toward Rosstrap Boulevard... or 'speeding' upward on 14th. before you exit the 'work zone' near the VFW.

I have a story that I'd like to share with you. It's not really the same but the way it was handle, seemed familiar.

I have a friend that was driving down 2nd street, just south of the library, about 2 years ago and from out of nowhere a dog came into the street and hit her car. She stopped and looked for the dog but it had kept running to the east. The dog wasn't hurt and there was no one around, from what she could see. (the dog later came home without injury.) She went on home and later that evening, a police office(no longer with LE & is gone) came to her home and told her that he was giving her a ticket for leaving "a scene of an accident" car vs animal. It was reported that she was seen leaving the area and that the witnesses had her car description and tag number. She was so upset, that she had raised her voice in shock, she was told that if she didn't "calm" down, she would be arrested. Needless to say, she was floored. Apparently, in Dodge City, it is against the law to hit any type of animal, squirrel, bird, dog, cat or whatever "animal" you happen to hit, and NOT report it, YOU can be given a ticket, fined and or jailed.
She ended up hiring a lawyer, going to "court", belittled by the "judge" and having to pay the fine. It wasn't even on the "law books" or whatever they are called prior to this incident. They had to call up district court to find out when it went into effect. She was the first ever charged with this. She found out later, who the dog belonged to and the person that reported her, owned the dog and it didn't have tags or shots. Hummm, guess what, NO charges were made for "Animal at large, running loose, or not current shots.
Doesn't make any sense, does it.

So Tat, I'm not surprised what you're going through. It's sad that this happens. The officer, should have given you a chance to tell him what you have seen and what evidence that you have. Not all police officers are short tempered and won't give you a chance. There are some really caring ones around. There's always more than one side but not all people want it known.
I feel that if you do this against one, then you best do it for everyone, ni matter who they are.

Well it sounds to me like you need to go back to the original problem. He damaged your car.

Do you have evidence that it happened?
That he did it?
A police report on it?

Take him to small calims court and sue for the money.

The pics of the plates might help in court.

If you think you have a case, consult a lawyer and file.

I have a police report and loads of pictures. I'm just more peeved because he's getting away w/ still driving around. He has several vehicles in his drive way and has been switching them around. A guest at my work asked what was going on (he seen the cop here earlier) and he suggested I call the KS State Attorney General. He said he had to go through them once and they took care of things quickly. Everything about this situation is not settling right w/ me and I can't just let it go lol
I realize there are bad cops and good cops. It's been a very very long time since I've had to deal with a bad one. Every cop I have talked to regarding this whole mess has been more than willing to answer my questions and have been very polite. This one I remember from when I was in high school, I'm suprised he's still an officer!!!

p.s thanks for the info about the car vs. animal .. I'll make sure to notify the police the next time one runs out in front of me j/k

If the private property is in the city limits of Dodge City, there is an ordinance about having current tags on a vehicle, whether it's in the street, the driveway, or the backyard. If they are in a building then that is another story. If they are outside call the Inspection Dept. of Dodge City about Code Enforcement at 225-8105. I know people that had to move or tag a vehicle that was in their driveway because of Code Enforcement. You can also call them for all the things that lurker mentioned above, overgrown grass in yard, etc.

I talked to them (code enforcement) after I talked to the police, she said that she has cited them several times for not having a plate on their vehicles, and she will go by and do it again. I showed her the picture I had w/ 2 vehicles not having tags because they shut the garage door that has one of the vehicles in it (one that wrecked into me) I completely forgot to ask her, but after citing someone so many times for the same thing what happens after that?? Do they get fined or anything.

Its a damn shame to say the least that you are the one having to run all over the place and do all the calling with no justice in sight...hopefully someone will help you...good luck
