    city ordinances...

can anybody tell me if there's some kind of ordinance against barking dogs? i've tried looking it up online, but was unsuccessful...

our neighbor complained about a dog in the neighborhood barking too loudly in the evenings, and evidently a policeman told the owners they'd have to keep their dogs muzzled if they continued barking- but only in the evenings.

does this sound real? can they legally make an owner muzzle their dogs just for barking??

i suggested they muzzle the old lady that was complaining.

I can agree with that, but I believe it's true. Kinda goes along with a noise ordinance. You can play music as loud as you want, until someone complains. I don't know if there's an hour limit, or after dark or what. I think they even have the same type of thing with lawn mowers. None after 10 pm or before 6 am or some crap like that.

According to City Code, chapter 8-402B, a noise disturbance includes..."The owning, keeping, or harboring of any animal that continously, repeatedly, or persistently for 15 minutes or more, without provocation by the complainant, creates a sound with is plainly audible across any boundary line." From what I can tell, this is in effect 24/7.

The same chapter deals with loud machines, lawn mowers, etc., and pretty much says from 7a-10p, there is no regulation. From 10p-7a, if the sound can be heard across boundary lines, it is in violation.

Music is a different story. Depending on the area the source is coming from and the time, there are different decibel levels that come into play. If it is between 10p-7a, it is in violation if it merely can be heard across property boundry lines. If the music is coming from a car, it has to be low enough that it can not be plainly heard at a 50 foot distance, whether it is parked or in motion.

We have a neighbor who puts their dog in the garage when they leave for work. It barks until they return at 5 p.m. I am 1 block away and can hear him all day (when I take the day off). I don't know how the neighborhood deals with it daily.

i would bet that neighbour is putting the dog in the garage because he digs out of a pen. thanks to glenda walker"s stupid ignorant law we can no longer stake dogs out for more than 3 hours a day.

Sounds like a bored dog. He/she would probly be much happier with some good chew toys.

I'm glad I don't live in town. Don't have to live with elbow close neighorly noise. Although the coyotes do get lively at night!

    gadwall,

I appreciate your stance, but I got to disagree...

I don't know that the law is so stupid. I've seen dogs on chains that get wrapped around tress, posts, etc. the animal lacked water and food and the dog suffers because of it. It's the owners responsibility to take care of their animal. Leaving a dog in that situation for extended periods of time (3 hours)...well for me it's just not right! I guess we're all entitled to our opinion.

    gadwall,

I might add, since I know you personally, I believe you are, or would be, a responsible owner. I don't think you would ever harm a dog, especially one you own.

I didn't mean to imply that you would. Sorry if I offended you!

mike, i have had dogs on chains for years. it's like anything else there's a right way and wrong way to do things. when you chain a dog out you make sure there is no entanglement to pose a threat to the dogs well being. our dogs got much more attention on chains than they do in a pen. bad dog owners are bad dog owners period. if you have to be told how to treat your dog by some law you don't deserve a dog.

no mike you didn't offend me most people don't know that the antichaining law was started and pushed by the humane socity of the u s. just one more spike in their attack on hunting dogs.
