Dodge City streets and packing houses

Why can't the city/county government pass a new law. Not sure if law is the proper term, but hopefully you will get my point.

My idea is for the city and/or county to charge the packing houses a 1/2 cent per head heavy usage tax for trucks driving on our city streets and tearing them up. From ruts in the road to potholes and bullsh!t dumped on the streets from the trucks. The 1/2 cent would actually be a 1/4 cent coming and 1/4 cent going. That way you get the bull haulers and the processed beef trucks.

I don't think that would be too big of a burden for the plants, and it would put some of the street repair costs back on the biggest problem of our streets not lasting very long.

My rough, and I feel conservative, estimate on the number of head processed each week, that tax would amount to around $10,200.00 per year that would be specifically earmarked for street repair in the city. It might also help keep our property taxes in the city/county down.

What do the rest of you think? Good idea? Bad idea? How would we go about getting something like that passed?

OR instead of enacting any type of new taxes they could take the money they already collect and use it wisely.

The short answer is to get the State to make the Landfill road into a spur. Then all Wyatt Earp truck traffic will have to use the "bypass" & Landfill Road; thereby avoiding Wyatt Earp entirely. This will be most important during the reconstruction of W. Wyatt Earp.

I don't know what the answer is and since I don't vote there anymore I can't chime in.... BUT I still pay property taxes and still have all the utilites on SO...... I say - ANY idea to make Wyatt Earp a drivable street when I come to DC for a visit is a good idea. I haven't seen WE in good shape for 20 years.

truck road usage

there is a project going in that will bypass wyatt earp to the south. kdot is in the process of purchasing right of way.. then there will be no commercial truck traffic on wyatt earp. should help considerably.

the only problem with that is it will take years to purchase and/or condemn property then construct a south bypass.

You are right Bubba - besides if the go south of WE - they are gonna be in the park........... They have community improved that park to death - I like the old Wright park better than what they have done with it. I cried when they lost the pool and the stream.......Oh the good ole days............

I think they should use the loop or bypass............. I thought that's what it was for........... why build more when they aren't using what they built in the first place???? No more taxes for truck routes...... they already have truck routes. I still think the cattle trucks ought to stay off WE...... they impede traffic to Sonic........LOL

The present "South" bypass is proposed to be completed around the Soutwest part of town, thus giving trucks complete bypass all the way around DC on the Southside. Garden CIty, Liberal, and other towns have had theirs complete for years. I don't know what is slowing up Dodge City's??

Gee - do you really have to ask what makes DC the LAST to do anything???? Don't you remember why GC got an Applebee's before DC? Why GC got a Target and DC still shops Walmart? Why GC has progress and DC is still goin down the "same ol road" to success???? Why it's cheaper to drive to Amarillo to catch Southwest than it is to fly out of Wichita? Why the only "hub" airport is in Topeka? BTW is Topeka a hub???? I'm not sure on that one. I just know DC has always been SLOW to change anything - I mean no disrespect - that small town charm does come at a price. It's not a bad thing just not a "progressive" thing. I think the powers that be like it that way and you are now in probably the 3rd generation of those powers. Love DC but they got left in the cattle trail dust years ago.
