If you want to carry a gun, know what you're doing

Recoil. Stopping power. Concealability. They’re all important if you’re considering starting the process to arm yourself with a handgun come July 1, when Kansas’ concealed carry law goes into effect.

But Larry Mulder, an owner of Cleve’s Gun Shop in Salina, says they’re not the most important considerations.

“The first factor to consider is whether you’re confident you would use it, not just to injure, but to seriously stop someone,” Mulder said. “If you have any question in your mind, get mace or pepper spray; don’t get a gun, because it’ll be taken away from you and used on you.”

If you pass that test, gun-sellers say, you need to find a weapon that you’re comfortable with and that you can fire accurately, with control.
