| I watched some of the city meeting from Monday and thought it was ridiculous to say the least. What was up with Dr the three minute rule doesn't apply too me? I can't believe these "health care" people were so clueless. Quoting statistics on the dangers of smoking has absolutely nothing to do with this issue and a ban sure isn't going to stop people from smoking. And the guy that claimed "my family doesn't go to restaurants because of the smokers." Hey clueless, would you like a list of restaurants that are smoke free so your family can go eat? Give me a break. These people had the lamest excuses I've ever heard, and I really hope they didn't think people are so stupid. Any business owner has the OPTION to make THEIR business a smoke free business. If you have a problem with that nasty killer second hand smoke go talk to the business owner don't ask the city to do your dirty work for you. And that crap about the city being responsible for the safety of the people. Thats within reason in case you failed to read it correctly.

| How right you are Detector. The smoke-free lobby is simply wanting Power over people. Our public buildings are already smoke-free and that's where the commissioners' influence should end.

 I agree. They're threatened to try to legislate smoking bans everywhere in Johnson County, similar to what's been tried in Lawrence and Missouri. I sincerely hope they don't. As it's been said before, it ought to e left up to business owners. If they don't mind it - especially the bars, then I just won't frequent them. There are non-smoking bars up here. We go there for their great burgers. Don't have to ingest smoke to enjoy them, either! I personally don't like to hang out in smoke-filled places. We went to a comedy club in Oklahoma City over the weekend. Came back to the hotel smelling like cigarettes and now my luggage and car smell like it too. It's just nasty! But my choice.

| I've exchanged a few emails with Terry Lee, and from what I gather the Doctor that spoke at the meeting talked about cigarette smoking being bad for you. Terry Lee even said in his email that he had first hand experience as he watched his father die from emphazema and that he was a cigarette smoker. While I feel for him and his father, they are missing the point. Everybody knows that smoking is harmful to your health. What this proposed ban is about is for the second hand smoke that is present when smoking is allowed. The fact is that there is no scientifically significant statistics to show that second hand smoke is harmful.
